Rating: Summary: Remarkably clear and magically elegant writing Review: This is one of my 2 favorite first novels I've read recently (the other is Art Corriveau's 'Housewrights'). Alice Sebold has delivered a truely original novel, written with stunning clarity. A truly remarkable first novel in so many respects. So very beautifully and crisply plotted. And the writing is so clear, as befits the narrator.Holden Caufield says you know you've read a great book when you wish the author were your friend so that you could call them up and ask them questions. My question for Ms. Sebold would be: when did you know the muse had touched you? One final note about the naysayers: People who complain about the subject matter simply didn't read the book. They read the reviews. The book treats the subject matter with respect and it's not in any way grisly. And folks who complained about it not living up to the hype set their expectations based on marketing. And no work of art can live up to your expectations if you decide something is going to have to change your life before you open its cover.
Rating: Summary: The Lovely Bones Review: Heavenly......literally. Engaging, human, psychologically very real. By far, best read of the summer.
Rating: Summary: mezmorizing Review: wow, this was definitly one of the most incredible books I've ever read. Rough start, but after hanging in there, I didn't want to read the last page. After working in a bookstore all day, the last thing I want to do is read sometimes, but this was well worth it. I've recommended it at my store, and have had only happy customers.
Rating: Summary: Why so much Hype? Review: Overrated to be sure, not as good as expected after the hype by Book of the Month authority. Subject was timely, straight from the newspaper but lacked the depth I kept waiting for. I did have trouble putting it down to see what would happen next but wanted to know the characters better. I did enjoy the fact that Susie did get to experience love in a physical way altho it seemed out of place. I kept wanting the guy and her friend to find the safe. Will be interesting to see what Alice Sebold does next.
Rating: Summary: This is the book to buy this summer!!! Review: I haven't read a heart-breaking page-turner like the Lovely Bones in a long time! I couldn't put it down and devoured it in one sitting! What a wonderful author Alice Sebold -- she beautifully writes how a family copes with the murder of their daughter Susie. I can't wait to start reading her memoir "Lucky" next!

Rating: Summary: hyped reviews Review: i think if one lets the words of reviews enter him too much, one does not see too clearly. sometimes bad review, better yet, with a bit of controversy mixed into it, do better than the "amazing" reviews for an author. i think this is a super read despite the hype, and for that matter "anti-hype"
Rating: Summary: This is a wonderful book Review: The Lovely Bones is a wonderfully well written and thoughtful book from beginning to end. It is about how the murder of a 14 year old girl named Susie Salmon changes the lives of her family and friends. This book has an interesting premise that people in heaven still long for things on earth. Each character is affected by her death greatly. Susie watches the lives of the people she loves from heaven. She watches her friends and siblings grow up. I loved reading about the romantic relationship between Susie's younger sister Lindsay and her boyfriend Samuel. I love the psychic connection Susie has with her friend Ruth Connors. Susie's spirit inhabits Ruth's body in one of the most touching parts of the book. Susie's parents respond to their daughter's death in very different ways. This causes them to drift apart. Susie's mother strays away physically and emotionally from her family for several years to forget the pain of her loss. Susie's father organizes memorials to remember his daughter every year on the anniversary of her death. However, he is unable to part with his Susie's clothes several years after her death. It is interesting to read how their marriage breaks apart and mends itself back together. Every character including Susie up in heaven learns to accept her death and move on. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
Rating: Summary: I loved it!! Review: I found this book to be very moving. I was haunted, fascinated, and spell bound. I have read over 20 books this summer, and this was absolutely one of the top three. I like Alice Sebold's Susie. Her strength and spirit (no pun intended) came through flawlessly within Sebold's writing.
Rating: Summary: Amazing...simply amazing. Review: This book was one of the most moving stories I have ever read and have recommended it to all of my friends. What a powerful, sad, inspiring story. This book will stay with me a very long time. I cannot wait to see what she writes next.
