Rating: Summary: What big authors don't need editors? Review: Rainbow Six is about...400 pages too long. There are about 300 pages of good Clancy here, but someone has to tell him when he's repeating himself. I can only handle so much description of training exercises. Yes, Tom, I get it, these guys are really well trained, now can you get on with the story!I started skimming this sucker at page 280 or so; and that's never a good sign. I would have quit reading it completely, but I kept hoping something good would show up; and it did occassionally. I give it two stars just so that I'm not lumped in with the reviewers who just wanted to trash Clancy's political views, but this books is probably more of a one and a half star effort.
Rating: Summary: Implausible pulp. Review: Previous TC books (not including his various Op-Center type "franchises") have required at least some massaging to yield a feature film of varying quality. Rainbow Six is a prefab script, ready to be filmed as soon as the money appears. John Clark's mention of SPECTRE (the evil organization in some of the more dubious James Bond films) was less self-effacing humor than a recognition of what he has decended to: a pulp fiction writer.
Rating: Summary: Heavy going, couldn't finish it. Like my action leaner. Review: -- and more realistic. The bad guys are just bad. The good guys are just good and they are judge, jury and executioner. Not my idea of good guys in America. As someone else said, read WEB Griffin for some good stories. Or Bob Mayer, Joe Dalton. Stephen Coonts.
Rating: Summary: one of his best Review: Great realistic story on modern threats. Sometimes long on details...it gives a great story on the possible threats from the evironazis that want us to be "one with the Earth." Clancy will make all the leftists mad with this book, but all the better.
Rating: Summary: The Last Tom Clancy Novel Review: I'm through with Tom Clancy. I've had some good times, but his latest book is so bad that I won't ever waste my time by reading another. he repeats himself endlessly. The content is negligible, the thrills minimal, the moral preaching nauseating, the politics fascist, offensive and ignorant in the extreme. As a physician I can speak to the treatment of medicine in this book. You'd think that Clancy, with all his millions, could afford at least to hire a consultant when he writes about things he knows nothing about. But no, we have a "cancer virus" that attacks the "upper GI" by invading the liver and kidney, transmitted both by respiratory droplets and sexual contact, spreading its "antibodies" throughout the body in 4-6 weeks (sic), not treatable with antibiotics (sic) and deliverable as an injectable "vaccine" to the entire third world. Excuse me? This is so stupid as to defy comparison, except perhaps to Clancy's ultra-right-wing world view in general. I am particularly repelled by his characterization of the Sierra Club, Earth First, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and (by extension) other environmental groups. Usually when you get rich and famous your mind relaxes and opens up a little. Clancy's appears to have atrophied. His blind hatred of these groups speaks eloquently of a little man in a little space, a coward afraid to face the real world. I'm sorry I read this book. Not only did it waste my time, it spoiled the other Tom Clancy novels for me. I was looking forward to rereading some of his classics, but how can I enjoy them now, For me this was the last Tom Clancy novel.
Rating: Summary: A very good book... Review: I think this was a very good book, but you need a little more background on it to fully understand it. I played the game based on the book, and it was really vague on the plot. I read this book to get filled in on the plot and other factors of the game that I didn't understand. So, my advice is play the game and then try to knock this book.Have a nice day.
Rating: Summary: Lots of exploding heads but no real suspense. Review: I left this book in a hotel room. That's how disappointed I was after reading Rainbow Six. The only reason I finished the book was that I have enjoyed Tom Clancy's other books and kept hoping that it would turn around. It didn't. It is a simplistic book about a highly trained counter-terrorist group that never fails to kill all the bad guys. Since there is never developed in the reader any real sense that the good guys might fail, the book seems to move from one self-serving win to another. At best, this book is long and boring. At a deeper level it paints a picture of covert operations agents as a group of psycopathic killers who have thinly sheathed their obsession in questionable purpose. The story would have been ever so much more interesting if Rainbow Six had to deal with the ramifications of a successful Dooms Day plot.
Rating: Summary: Tom, please write a GOOD book, and stop selling your name Review: Experienced readers have learned to avoid anything titled "Tom Clancy's...", as it is often inferior work written partially by others. So, with the hardback titled ''Tom Clancy - Rainbow Six'', I was looking forward to more of the REAL Clancy. Was I disappointed! The novel only barely reaches beyond the average X-Files serial book. Absent are Clancy's up-to-the-minute facts, figures and views on world - instead we have a formula-written tome which does not offer anything to the expectations of a usual Clancy fan. I used to buy Clancy in blind faith - I will check the reviews first from now on. Please Tom, unless you really need the money, can you sit down and put your heart and soul into another masterpiece please? Clancy fans will tolerate this book, as we are always hungry for more. But when you're expecting smoked salmon, fish and chips (French fries!) are definitely a bit of a shock. I've rated this book 2 out of 5 because Clancy can do better. As a book in general, it is still 4 out of 5. True Clancy fans will prefer to wait three years for another masterpiece. You set the standard Tom, please keep it up.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining but loony Review: Rainbow Six is a good read, but the plot is preposterous. It seems that in each novel he writes Clancy increases the level of villany of the bad guys. In his latest creation, Clancy has his very, very bad guys outdoing Hitler in genocidal madness. What evil is he going to invent for an encore? And then there are the good guys. They are oh so perfect -- and so one dimensional. John Clark is superb at what he does, but he is a total bore. Beyond his ability to smash terrorists, there is nothing else to this character. Ding Chavez is a Latino version of Clark -- all macho, but with one additional characteristic. He likes fatherhood. Clancy loves these military folks, but it is interesting that they are so devoted to family values. No fooling around in Clancy's world, no sex at all actually, even between man and wife. Every member of the RS team is married, has kids (but no sex), and is a devoted father. Maybe Clancy should have titled this one, "Father Knows Everything." Really, the most interesting character was the former KGB agent, Popov, who combined the good with the bad. He is a bit more complex, and for this reason, I would be surprised to see him reincarnated in Clancy's next novel. But it would be a good idea. Along with other readers, I would recommend waiting for the paperback. RS is an OK book but not worth the hardcover price.
Rating: Summary: Tom Clancy has not done his research for this book Review: Mr. Clancy has been well known for his books. The hunt for Red October, Cardinal, The Sum of all Fears, etc. Those were very good books, but it seems that Mr Clancy has the same nemesis that James Bond, the end of the Cold War. Mr. Clancy has no idea of the international arena and its players, nor does he know about other cultures and people. He level of knowledge is about the same of a country bumpkin. First of all, even if I'm not a basque, on his opening chapters, there were 3 terrorists on a plane, and one of them was called Miguel. I'm sorry but when I checked Miguel does not exists in Basque, the proper name is Mikel. Basque, in case Mr. Clancy does not know (he doesn't) is considered Europe's first language, and the Basques are considered the first Europeans. They take great pride on their language, culture and heritage, and a peace loving people, except for an extreme few. Another unreality by Mr. Clancy was that Basques only target Spanish government figures and police/Army, they don't attack international flights, it is not their Modus Operandi. Changing subjects, the idea of a Civil War in Spain is more far fetched that having one in the US. Furthermore, theUS is a more likely place to be suffering a Civil War, since it got a lot more Socio-Economical differences than Spain (which has Cultural differences). I do not mean to say that there will be a civil war in the US, but if it sounds ridiculous it is doubtly so when you think of a civil war in Spain. It is true that there are cultural and ethnic differences in Spain (were 4 languages are spoken and people have ethnic roots that go from the Mediterranean Sea to Scandinavia) but nobody would go to a civil war for them, not anymore. Other than that, I completely agree with Mr. Clancy view on terrorists, which I think are the scum of the Earth and should all be behind bars. One recommendation Mr. Clancy, read on your History and Geography, and then read some more. Travel overseas and learn about other cultures, DO NOT ESTEROTYPE, and do not pretend to write on international events if you do not know what you are talking about, and by the way I hold a B.S. in International Economics and a Master in International Affairs, both from US universities.
