Summary: From Kindergarten to College
Review: I cannot imagine not having my Webster's 10th Collegiate next to me a work or when I read. Not only is it comprehensive but the help in pronunciation is worth the price alone.

Summary: One of the worst dictionaries on the market
Review: This has to be one the worst dictionaries on the market. The definitions are outdated and often offensive, the art work is not informatrive and is not of good quality. Don't waste your money. Pick up the new American Heritage College Dictionary, fourth edition -- thats a dictionary worth its wieght in gold!

Summary: You can do better
Review: In comparing this with the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, the Random House wins hands down. In terms of ease of use, ability to copy and paste the definitions, features such as anagrams, etc., this product is lacking. I recommend that you buy the Random House edition.

Summary: Perfect dictionary for work
Review: This is the dictionary that is the perfect size for work or college dorm. I bought this not for the home but for work. It's a hardcover edition so it can just sit on my desk next to my computer. It's easily more convenient than having to go to the Merriam-Webster website, which can be very slow at times. Since getting this dictionary for work, I've used it almost everyday and have found every word I was looking for. Because it's a collegiate dictionary, it's got a nice reference in the back of the dictionary for things like signs and symbols and a handbook of style section. The paper stock is smooth, white and crisp. Each page is arranged in two columns, which I find easier to read than a three column page arrangement of the unabridged dictionary I use at home. For the price, it's a steal. B&N was charging $25 for this in one of its stores. I got this at Amazon for over $10 less and no tax!

Summary: Good book, bad software
Review: This CD gives you all the info in the hardcover, plus a few extras. That's great. The problem is that the software is difficult to install and annoying to use. There is an install optinon to install the sound data on your hard drive. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. There is a 29 page PDF manual which tells you how to install the sound manually, but that doesn't work either. There is a large readme file which gives completely different instructions for this task, and it is also incorrect, but it will get you close enough that you can figure out the rest if you are good with computers. When you launch the program, you get a splash screen that says "Authority & Inovation." While you are trying to figure out what that means and waiting for the program to launch, you have the feeling that you could have walked over to your bookshelf and looked up the word in the hardcover edition and saved time. MS Word, previously the slowest program I use, is up and running in half the time. There is a lot that doesn't work like you would expect. If you click on "Spelling Help" and type "annoying" into the dialog box and click OK, it says "No entries found!" Somewhere in the manual it probably tells you what you have to do to make it work. In contrast, the 100,000 word Webster's Dictionary an Thesaurus that sells for about[...]works well and is fast.

Summary: Reporters, editors, this one's for you
Review: This is the dictionary used for style purposes for the Associated Press and most newspapers. It's clear and concise, lacking in pretention (some would say erudition).

This is a tome that defines the term "Reference."

However, this is not the best for Crossword Puzzle aficionados (get the Random House Dictionary on CD) or for folks interested especially in the history of words (there is no substitute for the Oxford English Dictionary in such cases).

Summary: What's another word for "buggy"?
Review: Bought it. Loaded it... over and over again. Once loaded into my newish Imac with OS 9 I tried it with my word processor only to find that the word processor was acting in a very strange way. I unloaded the dictionary/thesaurus and my word processor and rebuilt my desktop. I loaded my word processor again straight from the original cd and then reloaded the dictionary/thesaurus, but the same problems occured. Called Merriam Websters tech aid and got a "duhh, gee I don't know what could be causing that." So, I just dumped the dictionary/thesaurus folder into the garbage and away it went. Bottom line ... very buggy. Maybe later versions, but not this one.
