Rating: Summary: never boring.... Review: I read several books over the summer and this one book was the best. I felt like i was right there w/ the characters.
Rating: Summary: Incomparable in its content Review: Very well written with descriptive passages that gave me the feeling that I was there in pre-war Japan. The fact that the book portrayed the dailyness of the Geisha's life enhanced the story even more. This is a life that none of us will ever live. My world is larger for having read it.
Rating: Summary: A very engrossing read! Review: I had the same reaction reading this book as when I read Wally Lamb's "She's Come Undone" -- you mean a MAN wrote this?? Mr. Golden has shown incredible insight and sensitivity in writing about a lifestyle that on the surface seems all about socializing, but in reality can be grueling, extremely demanding, and cruel. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: I am only 12 and I adored the book! So far, of course Review: I loved this! I am on page 220, and i am adoring this book. Some words are big, some paragraphs are a little too detailed (if you know what i mean) adn it is definatly meant for a more adult audience. i couldn't imagine that life! I especialy loved how Golden added so many differant types of charecters. An awsome book!
Rating: Summary: Overated and disappointing Review: A predicatable Japenese story full of stoicism and brutality. Intially a tragic story of a young girl kidnapped and then orphaned. She dreams of becoming a geisha. However once you realise that the life of a geisha is one of little consequence, salivating to every man's simplest whim you begin not to care. The men are vile. Japen seems full of cultural anoxerics! A book for only the most dedicated Japanophiles.
Rating: Summary: Informative and compelling! Review: Excellent story! A must read
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read Review: The simple discriptive nature of this book easily draws in the reader and makes it a great story. The historical references enable the reader to grasp the state of the characters. The love story does come off as sort of an unrealistic sidebar but overall a great book with which to end the summer.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: The book, while not the typical fast-paced murder novel, is definitely a page-turner. I never wanted to put the book down and was sad to see it finally end. The reader meets many interesting characters, and learns about the situation in Japan before, during, and after World War II. The Japanese culture is extremely different from America, yet the charaters in the novel show us that we are all the same.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful...Intriguing...Engaging... Review: This book is one of those incredible treasures that come to readers once in a lifetime. The characters were all so realistic. It felt like the opening and closing of a Japanese fan, disguising and at the same time allowing some peaking into the world a woman of the West surely is not aware of...Incredible read...Congratulations on this most beautiful book, Mr. Golden!!!!
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read Review: This book is a wonderful, compelling story about the trails and lifestyles of the Japanese Geisha. It was beautifully written, and is probably my favorite book that I have ever read. I would reccomend this book to anyone. You can't wait to read more. It is so hard to believe that Geisha's were actually living like this in Japan, and that they were admired. It is a totally intriguing novel.
