Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: The book I read was Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. I thought that this was a great book. It is about a couple that decides to skip all the chaos of Christmas and use the extra 4,000 dollars that they usually use on gifts, food, ect. And go on a cruise to the Island Princess. They decided to do this because their daughter, Claire, went to take an extra class on an Indian village. This way, she would not know about it. They got a surprise though, when Claire called to say that her and her new fiancé would be coming home for Christmas dinner. I would only recommend this book to an older age group because it is a little advanced.
Rating: Summary: Perfect to read on a cold winters night, with a hot toddie Review: This book is great light reading for the holiday season. The story is touching and funny and reads easily. Yes, it does bring tears to your eyes, but in a warm holiday way. Perfect if you want to curl up with a hot toddie on a cold winters night and read a fun modern christmas story. Perfect story for those with children who need a nice break. I was glad I read it.
Rating: Summary: Consise Review: "Skipping Christmas" was short, consise, and insightful. Luther displayed feelings most of us share briefly during the hustle and bustle of Holiday shopping, still in the end he shows that he is a true "Santa." Good book to read any time of the year. Grisham's characters and his dialogue all ring with truth. He puts you in the midst of the narrative and keeps you interested. Beverly J Scott author of "Righteous Revenge."
Rating: Summary: disapointing Review: I love all of the John Grisham books that I have read. This one though is full of characters that it's very hard to like. I don't indentify with them and don't want to. Go buy a painted house and skip this one.
Rating: Summary: skip the others, read this book! Review: Loved this book. I read it a year ago and laughed and cried. It will be standard holiday reading each year. To me, Luther Krank wanted to do what most of us only dream about...skip Christmas just for once. I loved the neighbors - we all have a Fromeyer in our neighborhoods... I laughed out loud at the scene of Luther trying to hastily get the Snowman up. I wish I could tell Grisham to ignore all the nay-sayers and let him know that it was a marvelous and touching holiday story. Love, love, love this book!
Rating: Summary: Reason why I picked up the book?--I'm an athiest of course! Review: After reading Skipping Christmas, I was a little disappointed with the ending, but the last few pages should not alter my opinion. I enjoyed Luther and his antics. It was a quick little read as everybody else has already said. Grisham should come out with more of these little books. I swear everybody at the airport this past month was reading it while waiting for their flight. Grisham scores...again.
Rating: Summary: Good Pre-Christmas Gift Review: My mother in law gave this as a gift to everyone before the holidays & I loved it. I read it in two nights and while some of it was quite predictable Grisham's writing style made it fun all the same. It's a great reminder that the holdiays make us all a little crazed!b
Rating: Summary: Skipping this book... Review: I found this holiday novella by John Grisham to be entertaining, but not a must-read. Luther Krank, disgusted by the amount he and his family spent on last Christmas and how little they have to show for it, decides that his family will skip Christmas this year and instead go on a cruise. After all, daughter Blair has gone to Peru to work in the Peace Corps, so it will just be Luther and Nora. Why shouldn't they save all that money and use it on something more enjoyable and relaxing? The Kranks don't put up a tree, don't send Christmas cards, don't have their traditional Christmas Eve party. Their neighbors and friends are incredulous, especially when the Kranks don't even put Frosty on their roof, a neighborhood tradition. However, skipping Christmas isn't as easy as Luther thinks it will be and when the unexpected happens, he finds out what Christmas is really all about. While entertaining and a definite departure for Grisham, this novel left something to be desired. I thought that the Kranks' spending on Christmas in the past was WAY over the top (get real - $300 for Christmas cards?!?!?) and their idea to skip Christmas was fine, but they went overboard with it. The reactions of the neighbors on Hemlock Street was also beyond believable. I found them to be just a bunch of nosy meddlers, and annoying, to boot! This is a book to check out of the library - skip buying it.
Rating: Summary: Our Ninth Reading Selection Review: Skipping Christmas was our December 2002 Festive Reading Selection. This is a book where our members varied in opinions a lot. While some of our members loved the book and thought it was funny while others didn't care for the main character or thought the this book didn't live up to Grisham's writing abilities. The majority of our members did like the storyline and loved the fact that Nora and Luther wanted to take a year off of the hustle and bustle of the Holidays to take a cruise. We all basically thought that their neighbors were rude and inconsiderate and some of us didn't think the ending was realistic. When we polled the members for a rating, the lowest and more common was 3/5 but we did have one member that rated this book 5/5. Our average rating for this book was a 3.5/5, but for Amazon purposes I have listed it as a 3/5.
Rating: Summary: Great quick read Review: Great book, would recomend it to anybody. Only took about two days to read amazingly. Good story that shows how much people can work together to get something done. Also great for showing how rediculous some of the Christmas rituals can be, funny and true.
