Rating: Summary: Just What I Needed! Review: Even though I knew that "Skipping Christmas" wasn't in the same genre as John Grisham's previous novels, the minute I saw the title I knew I just had to read it."Skipping Christmas" gives John the opportunity to allow his delightful sense of humour to be shown, and also to relate to so many of us who have, at times, felt a great desire to "skip Christmas". From the first identification with Luther Krank as he attempts to do away with all the commercial and guilt induced trappings of the season, to the very last line, this novel captures the imagination and heart. Those who could never imagine anything other than a traditional Christmas (complete with roof top decorations and thousands of cards) may have difficulty relating to this story. But for those of us who have longed at times to just find a big hole to hide in from late November through to December 26, this book will really touch base. Best of all, John manages to say "I understand what you're feeling", and then beautifully bring everything back into focus. John Grisham's skill as a writer has been showcased in his legal fiction for many years now. As much as I've enjoyed each one, I just have to say that I really hope he'll take his readers on another delightful detour along the "Skipping Christmas" line again in the near future.
Rating: Summary: Class Christmas tale for modern times Review: Call it a warm Christmas tale or simply a farce. John Grisham has delivered a short novel unlike any of his previous works. First of all, it's funny above all. Luther Krank comes up with the idea of skipping Christmas altogether as he and his wife are caught in traffic under the blizzard. Their freshly-out-of-grad-school daughter Blair is off to Peru on Peace Corps for a year. Luther quickly preoccupies with the idea of taking a 10-day cruise to the Caribbeans with his wife Nora. Now that means no crowded malls, no jostling through grocery shop, no corny office parties, no calendars from the town police department, no fruitcakes from the fire bureau, no wasted unwanted presents, no Christmas tree, no Frosty and decorations. But, as the Kranks are about to discover, skipping Christmas unveils incredible consequences-including being labeled as "display of selfishness" by their neighbors on Hemlock Street. Their house would be the only one among the 42 in the block with no Frosty and decorations which finishes with a 6th at the decoration contest. This book is a page turner but more importantly it offers a preposterous (but funny) look at the holiday chaos and frenzy. 3.7 stars.
Rating: Summary: Good book, fast read Review: I liked the book. It flowed nicely and didn't take forever to read. I walked away happy that I'd taken the time to sit down with it.
Rating: Summary: A great short story Review: I wanted to read this book just because the title was intriguing alone. I've had thoughts of what it would be like to skip Christmas instead of going through all of the things we all do - year after year. Grisham's writing style had me laughing out loud several times. It almost brought me to tears too. I read the book over the course of a few short plane flights and probably could've read the whole thing in a few uninterrupted hours. I wish it was longer - only because I enjoyed it so much.
Rating: Summary: A Great Christmas Story Review: It's got it all -- laughter and tears. Grisham captured life as most of us in America know it. A wonderfully fun book and an easy read. It will be a favorite at our house for many Christmases to come.
Rating: Summary: Great Holiday Fun Review: When a person wants some easy holiday reading, this is the book! I read this last November and can't wait to read it again! I have recommended it to all of my friends as a way to start the holiday season. Nothing too heavy, but a nice story. Great if you're short on time, but like a bit of a comical story with an uplifting ending!
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: This was the perfect book for me to read on a cold, wet, UGLY November day. It was light-hearted and funny, and I agree with every one else... it's destined to be a made for TV movie. I know I'd watch it :).
Rating: Summary: Disappointed I spent the time Review: I always believe if you take the time to read, make it worthwhile. Something to tickle the kanoodle at least. This book was just a waste. It would be fun for a 12 year old. It was just downright silly. I expected more from Mr. Grisham. I am willing to bet that one of his kids either wrote it or gave him the story line.
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: "Skipping Christmas" is a charming story filled with characters you would love to have as neighbors, even as you can picture them standing outside the Kranks house singing Christmas carols at all hours...and placing Frosty's on the rooftops! I have not laughed out loud while reading a book in a long time, as I did while reading this novel. As others have said, and I agree, this could easily be made into a delightful "made for TV movie", hopefully someday soon we will see that come to pass. "Skipping Christmas" is definitely a different type of book for John Grisham, but it is very enjoyable - - take a day or two out of your busy holiday schedule to read this book!!
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I, too, am glad that I did not heed the negative comments about "Skipping Christmas". I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable book, and agree that it has "made for TV-movie" written all over it. John Grisham delivered a funny, witty, and charming novel with characters anyone would delight in having as neighbors!
