Summary: mindless reading
Review: I have not read more than 1 or 2 John Grisham books so it wasn't his writing that drew me to this. It was that this book had stayed as #1 on the best seller list for so long. After reading it, I think the reason the book spent so long on that list was due to the author name, not the book itself. It was an easy little read - never really challenging the reader's thought process, an appropriate book for sitting in the waiting room of your local dentist's office. I do believe if this story had been submitted by an unknown author, it probably would have been returned with a rejection note stating - "nice little story - plot line needs more development".

I fully expect to see this whole story in some made-for-TV Christmas special starring Dan Akroyd by the end of 2002. So, if you are looking for a relatively quick escape from reality and just want to read what amounts to a sit-com in a book, enjoy, relax and have at it (or wait for the TV special)!

Summary: Skipping pages...
Review: A big Grisham fan, I was terribly disappointed with this book. It was redundant and I could not finish it. I bought it with such joy and anticipation because I completely loved A Painted House (I want a sequal to that)and expected another beautifully written novel that was not centered on law. Every page seemed to be a chore to read. I pick it up still in hopes that eventually the story will go somewhere, but I am more than 3/4 finished with it and still am not interested. If you want a good Grisham novel, read A Painted House. That was one I could not put down- it was a "call in sick to work" kind of book.

Summary: Different, short, funny
Review: I read this book in one sitting during an hour and a half long free period. It was funny, not that original, but still worth reading. The characters didn'texactly come to life, and I wish I had neighbors as nice as the main characers. if I hadn't been given it for christmas I probably would not have read it at all, and I certainly wouldn't buy it for myself, so If I were you I'd wait until its in your local Library.
I'd say 3 and a half stars.

Summary: Bravo for diversity
Review: As a novelist I found Mr. Grisham to, once again, be capable of telling a story very well without being confined to his original successes! His versatility is exceptional - all those wonderful legal stories, then A Painted House and now "Skipping Christmas", this funny story that touches so many corners of our heart. I marveled at the wonder of actually laughing with a Grisham book! It surely will be a light-hearted Christmas movie in the near future. Bravo for his diversity, his ability to change courses and still show great writing abilities and for proving that a writer can change venues and still be true to his art!

Summary: Another Great Book from Grisham
Review: I really enjoyed this book and read it in one night. It is funny and an enjoyable read and you really get to feel for Luther and his wish not to participate in Christmas. I am enjoying how Grisham has been moving out of his traditional law arena as he has done with his past two novels. I was a bit dubious at first to read them but I loved them both. Keep up the good work John and to others, don't be put off by the title or the fact that it is not a 'law' book as such. This is a really funny and enjoyable read. If you are a Grisham fan you will enjoy this.

Summary: Ridiculous!
Review: I thought this book was ridiculous and hardly worthy of one of my favorite authors. It is barely more than a glorified short story. I really enjoyed A Painted House, which was a departure from the usual, and was looking forward to something perhaps similar. What a disappointment!

Summary: This is a truly awful book.
Review: Carelessly banal, insipid, and cliche, this book is not worthy to be published under ANY name, much less a name that people buy because (with few exceptions) his books are a decent, if somewhat superficial, read. (Some are FAR better than others.) And this one is the worst of the lot. The worst of anyone's lot! I am a voracious reader & read even some bad and mediocre books to the finish just to find out what happens. I forced myself to keep reading this drivel until I just couldn't stand it any more and put it down, half finished. Yuck.

Summary: A light, easy read
Review: Its important when you read this to know what you're getting into. This book doesn't try to be profound, so if you're looking for a Charlie Brown-like treatise on the commercialism of Christmas, don't bother. And there is no murder, no lawyers, or runaway juries. Its just fun. I read it in one sitting and although I must confess to some annoyance at the ending (no trick ending--I swear!) it was very okay. It was nice to see a more humorous side to Grisham!

Summary: skip this book, please
Review: Not Grisham, absolutely not Grisham.....Totally predictable, characters are not your everyday neighbors, where does Grisham live? If you need some uplifting, go see "It's a wonderful life"

Summary: Skipping Christmas is light-hearted fun
Review: So many reviewers have attacked Grisham for daring to step out of the Legal Thriller Category where he has made such a mark. Give me a break! This is a great little book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a lighthearted spoof of life in America at Christmas time. Is there a better time of the year to enjoy a humorous tale?
I smiled through the entire second half. There are several unexpected twists along the way as the Kranks prepare (and not prepare) for Christmas. Luther Krank is determined that their first year as empty-nesters is going to be like none before. He succeeds in a hilarious manner.
My advice, if you are looking for a legal thriller, skip this one. But if you can use a good laugh, don't miss Skipping Christmas.
