Rating: Summary: Drek Review: This is one of the most irritating books I have ever read. It is completely without artistry, totally predictable, and packed with the kind of characters that make life in America seem hopeless and embarrassing. It is a depressing and shallow book. No wonder our children don't bother to learn to read or write. Why bother? Might as well just go see a movie. Buy a good meal or a house plant instead of this book.
Rating: Summary: this book is hilarious! Review: O.K., Grisham is my favorite author. So I didn't read "A Painted House", but I got the first chapter by e-mail as I always do before his books are released, & it just didn't grab me. I'm sure one day I'll give it a chance because I love the way J.G. writes. You should get a kick out of this! As usual, Grisham's grasp of human idiosyncracy makes for some great moments. I saw in a review in the newspaper where they're saying Luther belongs with Scrooge & the Grinch. A new holiday classic that everyone should try this season! If Mr. Grisham would allow it, this would make for a great new holiday movie classic as well. Can't wait for "The Summons"!
Rating: Summary: Skipping Christmas Review: I was wondering how John Grisham was going to twist this family's desire to skip Christmas into an amusing tale. I laughed out loud while reading all the humorous details of throwing it all together at the last minute. Even those of us who plan everything to death can appreciate the frantic rush of Christmas and how there is just NEVER enough time before the big day. An easy read. No lawyers or courtrooms. I nice change for this author!
Rating: Summary: A nice afternoon read Review: Luther and Nora Krank's only child has gone to Peru with the Peace Corps. Luther decides that the $6,000 they normally spend on Christmas might be better spent on a $3,000 cruise for the two of them. After convincing his wife that they should "skip Christmas" all hell breaks loose. While some admire his decision, others find it quite disturbing. There are some twists and turns, a few chuckles and a few tears. It was an enjoyable 2-3 hour read. (...)
Rating: Summary: The Irony Of It All Review: I give this 5 stars. Not because it's a Grisham masterpiece. It's so shallow. I flew threw it in a few hours. If you enjoy inspirational stories presented in a framework along the lines of "It's A Wonderful Life" or "A Christmas Carol", but not shallow like "Skipping Christmas", I recommend that you also read "West Point" by Norman Thomas Remick. I say "also" because Grisham is always worth reading -- even if he tries to forget about this one after he deposits all that money in the bank thanks to those who buy anything at Christmas. Meanwhile, I myself give "Skipping Christmas" 5 stars because of how clever Grisham is. His motive for the book is the exact antithesis of the storyline. He cleverly recognized the irony of it all. Do you?
Rating: Summary: An easy read; a cute story Review: It's not mind-bending, it's not earth shattering. It's just a sweet little story about a couple, Nora and Luther Krank, who decide to rebel against the commercialism of Christmas. I didn't see the ending coming at all (I'm apparently slow, as well), so it was a nice surprise. This book is an easy read, even for someone like me, who doesn't do a lot of reading. I'd recommend it -- in fact, I did recommend it to a total stranger, just today.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious, still giggling 2 weeks later Review: This book is off the beaten track for Grisham and I was leary at first. This book had me giggling from beginning to end. Light reading for a break. Grab the hot chocolate, sit by the fire and get ready to thoroughly enjoy the book. Couldn't put it down until I was finished with it.
Rating: Summary: Holiday Unbliss Review: I think it's safe to say we all experience the overwhelming feelings that Christmas and the holidays bring. Not just the excitement, but the dread of shopping, spending money, putting up decorations, etc. I have often wanted to skip it all myself and almost did last year when I was on bedrest during pregnancy. But my traditions got the best of me. (My husband was not happy about all the work he had to do as I instructed him from my bed!) This book deals with a subject that many are too afraid to admit. But in the end, what really matters is family, friends and being together. Very amusing story that really hits home!
Rating: Summary: highly entertaining but VERY short Review: Builds up nicely and kept me entertained for a couple of hours. Nice change of pace. Fits in with everyone's life this time of year. Recommend highly. Thank you Mr. Grisham for something nice that made me feel good. It is funny that every year we think about dropping out of Christmas and the family and friends all have a fit. Someday maybe we will be brave.
Rating: Summary: Not his best work, but ok for a quick read Review: This is not Grishams best, but it is enjoyable and quick. I did think some parts were a little boring. Its a good thing it was a short novel, otherwise I might feel like i wasted time. I do think it is overated a bit. I give it 3 stars because it's a holiday book with a meaning.
