Review: My wife and i just returned from a vacation in Hilton Head, SC and Savannah, GA. Savannah stores and tour guides always talk about "THE BOOK" and "THE MOVIE". We had no idea what or who the book was about until we listened to the tapes on the drive home from Georgia. What a great narrative and description of the city! Now that we've listened to the book AND rented "the movie" (which doesn't do the book justice) - we are planning another trip to Savannah just to relive the book all over again. Highly recommended!!

Review: this book was only ok by my standards. the description was excellent of the southern city, but other than that, it was really not that spectacular. i was disapointed because it did not live up to the expectations i had for it. i would suggest to save your money, and maybe get it at the library if you are intereste

Summary: I Can't Believe They're For Real!!
Review: This is a great book. Not brilliant by my standards but fully deserving of the nice reviews its been getting! It oozes Southern twang and, like Joe Odom says, it'll be "one hell of a movie!". In fact, it is, "one hell of a movie". Nice, casting Spacey and Cusack. Anyhow, the book - highly recommended. And no, I cannot believe it's a work of non-fiction!

Summary: Wonderful Surprise
Review: I did not know what to think about this book when I picked it up and I never saw "the movie" (I would rather read the book than see it on screen.) At first, I thought the book would be about the people and lifestyles of Savannah, but it turned into a pleasant surprise about murder and scandal. Last surprise was that it is a non-fiction. Very entertaining.

Review: I was shocked to find out that this was true story. Hard to believe that one man was lucky enough to meet all those crazy people. Then again I wouldn't want any midnight graveyard dirt ending up on my porch.

Review: I am shocked at this book's great reviews that are posted here. The book is a great disappointment to me. It does not, and can not keep the reader interested. It is a very, very boring book. With each new chapter, I hoped it would change my opinion. It did not. I never finished the book.

Summary: This is not the worst book I've ever read...
Review: But it's in the top 10. My practice of waiting until "bestsellers" hit the public library and then checking them out has paid off again! John Berendt must have cynically counted on the low expectations of the American reading public when he threw this book together. My greatest disappointment in the book was that the author didn't care enough about his project to tie any of the innumerable loose ends together. Characters appear at random. Some of them are connected with the "plot" and some apparently are just local color. I think I've put more thought into writing this review than Berendt did into writing the book. With so many good books out there, I'd advise you to read something else.

Review: I must admit I am not an avid reader, but if I read more books like this one all that would soon change. This book has everything. Greed,sex,murder,voodoo, black debutantes, a gay murder mystery, and best of all a black Drag Queen that will have you in hysterics. For anyone who has seen the film you absolutely have to read this book. The best part is this story is entirely TRUE, so it is left up to that old adage does life imitate art or vice versa.
