Summary: Crusie is a new favorite of mine....
Review: "Tell Me Lies" is another Crusie small town tale of a cheating husband, and a wife, Maggie Faraday, who finds evidence of his affair (crotchless panties under his car seat), only to fall in love, all over again, with her first romance, C.L. Sturgis. Frog Point, the town of their youth, seems innocent on the surface, but there are a lot of secrets that have not been turned up yet by the town gossips.

Maggie, who's finding out too late that nobody in Frog Point likes her husband Brent, decides to let him run off to South America as he's planned, before she launches her divorce. She's trying to hold off her feelings for C.L., and wishes she had when Brent turns up dead, and both of them now have a motive for murder. Caught in the middle are Emily, the Faraday's young daughter, who loves both parents but instinctively knows there will be trouble in the family and Treva, Maddie's best friend, whose secret is so old and so buried, she can't possibly tell Maddie the truth. Right up till the end, it isn't apparent

Cruisie manages to mix humor with her taste for outrageous sex and chocolate, and with the mystery of Brent's untimely demise. Maddie's a true heroine in the Crusie tradition, mixed up, mad, confused and much loved by the people whose lives she touches.

Droll, sentimental, appealing, sexy and told for laughs, "Tell Me Lies" is a great beach book, and a winner for the consistent Crusie!

Summary: Read Crusie's
Review: Feeling virtuous for volunteering to clean her husband's car, Maddie Faraday reaches under the front seat of the Caddy and pulls out a pair of black lace crotchless panties - Not Hers! Thus begins a roller coaster series of events that will forever change her life.

Maddie lives in Frog Point, Ohio, a very small town where everybody knows everybody's business, and the business of their neighbor's long dead ancestors to boot. Maddie, forever the good girl, has never given anyone anything but "nice" things to say about her, her daughter Emily, and her soon-to-be-in-divorce-court husband Brent. Not even her mother, nor her best friend since grammar school, know how unhappy she has been with her marriage to a man who is not often home, and disinterested when he is. She had threatened to leave him once before when he cheated on her, but this time she is positive - the marriage must end.

Then her old high school flame turns up at her door. Says he's looking for Brent. Maddie hasn't seen him for twenty plus years, and although she is distracted and upset, she still feels the chemistry radiating between them. Later, she confronts Brent with his infidelity. He becomes enraged and knocks her around - something he has never done in all their married life. He leaves, slams the door behind him, and Maddie never sees him again - alive! And Maddie is a prime suspect in the murder investigation.

This lighthearted romance, with a good mystery included, also deals with some serious issues - a youthful middle age woman's coming of age, among them. Ms. Crusie fills her novel with humor, terrific characters, and lots of good lovin'. Maddie's dilemmas just seem to grow in number, as she tries to prove her innocence, redefine her life and care for and protect her grieving daughter. Jennifer Crusie reminds me of a Midwestern, Susan Isaacs, who is from Long Island. Their ethnicity and 'regionality' notwithstanding, both women tackle humor, romance and mystery in a similar way - and both are terrific writers. This is a really good light read, with a twist - don't miss it!

Summary: Good.. but Crusie's done better!
Review: I had one irk with this book, and it was the writing style. When characters were speaking it was always "and Maddie said", and "and so and so said" I got so sick of the and said style of speaking by the end of this book.
Good book, but at times it could have been the latest Belva Plain novel with the theme and storyline of finding your high school sweetheart while your marriage is going downhill. The usual Crusie humor does lie beneath though.

Summary: Tell Me Lies, But Wil I Believe Them
Review: I haven't read a Cruise novel for a while and I was happy to see her sense of quirkyness has not disappeared. There is just something so realistic about Maggie and small town live (which I know about) I just had to laugh. Although sometimes I cannot understand why the main character choose to stay in a loveless marriage, this book surprised me with all its twists and cooky situations. There were even a few surprises that will make your jaw drop (which my neighbor on the train mistook for me having an anxiety attack). All in all, I enjoyed this book.

Summary: Tell Me Lies-good but frustrating
Review: I read this book after "Crazy for You," and I found that I didn't like it nearly as much. While "Tell Me Lies" has a lot of Crusie's trademark quick wit, super-sharp dialogue, and appealing characters, it seemed often frustrating and jumbled. I think Crusie maybe tackles too many serious themes, and though with each she is beautifully perceptive & articulate, I found myself getting irritated by the constant distraction away from Maddie's central problem. For instance, Crusie's narrative would touch on something that really built tension and curiosity, and then suddenly there would be long passages dedicated to Maddie's daughter Em and all her precociousness, Em and her friend Mel in their treehouse, etc. I couldn't help but feel that Em's place in the story detracted from the fluidity of the plot. Another example - while Crusie successfully captured how stifling the gossipy small town of Frog Pointe could be, at the same time, it got to the point where I just wanted to tear my hair out in frustration that everyone was seriously THAT obsessed with "what will people say" that they seemed to base every single action on what the neighbors would think - including Maddie at many critical points in the novel. Very irritating, at least to me. The upside of the book was the beauty of the writing itself, the sweetness of C.L., and most importantly, the development of Maddie's self-identity. Enjoyable read, but "Crazy for You" and "Welcome to Temptation" are more polished and more fun.

Summary: You won't be able to put it down! (4.5 stars)
Review: I thought this book was a great suspense novel. It was a great mystery about murder, mischief, and adultery. Maddie Faraday finds out her husband is cheating on her, plus C.L, the guy she lost her virginity to in high school, shows up. The events that follow will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The only think I didn't like about this book was that it was a little unrealistic. (WARNING: Don't read the rest of this review if you don't want to know the ending!) Only two weeks after Maddie's husband gets killed, she says she loves C.L. and might want to marry him.

Summary: No lie...this one is a winner!
Review: I've been a fan of Jennifer Crusie's for quite some time although I haven't read too many of her books. I own them all, but it's a case of too many books, too little time. Anyhow, I'm glad I made some time for Tell Me Lies. It was a nice romantic story with a little page-turning mystery thrown in. Light and simple and perfect for a day of relaxation.

Tell Me Lies is the story of Maddie Faraday who, during the course of a clean-out of her husband, Brent's, car, finds a pair of black, crotchless underwear under the seat - and they are not hers! But that situation turns out to be the least of Maddie's problems - throw in an 8-year-old daughter who notices something awry with her parents, as well as two nosy neighbors, a best friend who has a big secret of her own, and gorgeous C.L. Sturgis, the boy who took her virginity 20 years before, back in town trying to get some answers. Oh, and then there's that pesky little murder that really sends Maddie over the edge....

This is a funny story about a marriage gone wrong in the middle of a small town that sees everything. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to finally reading the rest of my Jennifer Crusie collection. If you are looking for something light, yet page-turning, I suggest Tell Me Lies with two thumbs up - and that ain't no lie!
