Summary: America and Classroom Logic
Review: America has always been the largest of classrooms. Experiments come and go, as do sucess and hardships. But one thing stays central to survival: better days ahead, and resources that work. Any of the leadership America chooses who drifts from these basic premises will inevitably have a difficult time sellng the idea of America, to citizens or foreigners alike. Immigration politics that ignore the priorities of American families and gravitate toward speculative profits that dump American families into the ocean of oblivion are never worth the powder to blow them to hell since the cool light of scrutiny can reveal their flaws with effective leadership. Cowards are never leaders, and persons who disrespect the diversity of America will never succeed without arbitrary and oppressive collusion. America and its classrooms are vital to America's progress, and it is unobtainable without recognizing that fact. It can be done more easily or harder, but done it will be, and the quality of America and its beliefs are tied security to that anchor of reality, supported or not by American parents, corporations, friends and relatives. Losing sight of America's promise and obligation to deliver is the most dangerous path that could ever be taken to increase her weakness, and cripple her strength.

Summary: reduces the stress level for you AND your students
Review: Did lthomros read the same book the rest of us read? It actually takes more time & effort from the teacher to use Love and Logic, but it is worth it! LOGICAL consequences presented in LOVING manner helps the child maintain his/her dignity.. it's how most of us would prefer to be treated!

Below, I've taken some statements from the book. If you agree with this philosophy, you will love the book. It works for all ages. This method helps teachers to avoid POWER STRUGGLES with kids and teenagers.

The Three Rules of Love & Logic

1) People Learn from Their Own Decisions

2) Use Enforceable Limits--Provide Choices Within Limits

3) Apply Consequences with Empathy

The Love & Logic techniques:

-Put teachers back in control of the classroom

-Result in students who are internalized in their discipline rather than dependent upon external controls (THEY do the thinking!)

-Raise the level of student responsibility

-Prepare students to function effectively in a world filled with temptations, decisions, and consequences

In conjunction with reading this book, I also took part in workshops about Love and Logic that were offered at my school. The book itself, however, is easy to read and offers lots of examples and practical suggestions.

Summary: A Way to Find your Instructional Persona
Review: For most of us, becoming an authority is a difficult but necessary part of becoming a teacher. This book shows ways of exerting authority in a humane and rational way. I am saddened that another reviewer felt that it was manipulative. Honestly, I felt that the book's basic message was about how to stop _being_ manipulated, and how to get _yourself_ under control, which is the necessary pre-requisite for helping others control themselves. This book helped me get away from a lot of the head games I was playing with my students. If you feel that the book's chatty, psychobabbly style is wrong, try the brilliant (if complex) "Teaching Children to Care," by Ruth Charney perhaps the most intellectually-focused book on teaching I have read, which happens to focus on teaching children discipline.

Summary: Develop SELF-ESTEEM and SELF-DISCIPLINE in your students!
Review: How many of us have tried system after system of discipline in an attempt to attain and/or maintain control of the classroom and facilitate an EFFECTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, only to find ourselves frustrated and ironically powerless? Jim Fay and David Funk ask us to discard "systems" of discipline and adopt a "principles" method of management. The "Four Key Principles of Love & Logic" are the following:

1.THE ENHANCEMENT OF SELF-CONCEPT
2.SHARED CONTROL
3.CONSEQUENCES WITH EMPATHY
4.SHARED THINKING

Fay and Funk demonstrate through various scenarios, tips, and "Pearls" of wisdom how and why conducting your class or school according to these principles can VALIDATE YOUR AUTHORITY and EMPOWER STUDENTS, thus enhancing the student-teacher relationship. Learn to ELIMINATE THE ALL-TOO-COMMON POWER STRUGGLE by giving students limited control on your terms. Key ideas to look for are "enforceable statements," "thinking vs. fighting words," and "consequences vs. punishment."

Teaching with Love & Logic, a collaboration representative of over 105 years of school experience and strongly supported by research, presents practical ways in which teachers and administrators can help their students become confident, responsible individuals, internalized in their discipline. It is well written and a pleasure to read. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY TEACHER WHO WANTS TO MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE.

Summary: Clear, Applicable, Easy
Review: I felt like I needed to write my own appraisal of Teaching With Love and Logic in order to offer an opposing opinion to those opinions written by two other reviewers.
One reviewer said this book was repetitive. This is true, but for an important reason: There are only a few basic Love and Logic® principles! What Teaching With Love and Logic does is take these few principles and show the reader how to apply them in various situations, differing environments and with a range of grade levels.
Another reviewer said that this book is overwhelming. The principles of L & L are simple to understand and even easier to apply. Teaching With Love and Logic will help teachers become stress-free and find more time and energy to focus on effective and rigorous teaching.
Can you imagine a classroom full of responsible, productive, and happy students who are in control of their own behavior? It is possible! Love and Logic® works! You can have fun teaching again! Becoming a Love and Logic® teacher is the best thing you can do for yourself and for your students. Teaching With Love and Logic is a powerful resource for any teacher. Check out the other Love and Logic® books, too!

Summary: Useful but overwhelming
Review: I read the book from cover-to-cover, but the organization of the text will allow readers to jump to specific topics if they are seeking ideas for dealing with a particular challenge.
I liked the many examples of possible classroom situations and solutions presented by the authors. The authors provide well-honed points on the importance of being prepared to answer challenging situations with a Calm, Logical and Respectful response.
I also appreciated the common sense statements like, "You can't make people angry and sell them something at the same time." which are boldfaced throughout the book to drive home important points.

Summary: Teaching with Love and Logic
Review: I was VERY disappointed in this book. As someone who has been working in the classroom for the last year, I was disgusted and disappointed with the tactics to gain control in the classroom this book suggests. I was offended by the stressful and manipulative tactics to endear yourself to a student, and I feel this book is NOT a good book for current or prospective teachers. As a teacher I work with who has 30 years of experience said to me, "as teachers, we can't solve every child's problems, but we have to try."...this book suggests tactics that get you home on time and leave the child with more stress, worry and confusion.

Summary: Idealism at its Peak
Review: If only classroom discipline was as simple as this...or as idealistic.

Maybe it works in American classrooms...I don't know. But it certainly falls flat for Asian classrooms.

There may be a need to return to the drawing board and check how feasible these strategies could ever be, even if you are an experienced teacher.
