Rating: Summary: Excellent!! Review: After seeing an interview with this man some time ago when he took a group of high school kids who were supposed to be useless at languages and made them somewhat fluent in under a coulpe of days I was impressed. After listening to the first two cd's in this set I am equally impressed. This method has made a difference in just one listening I can't wait to go back to college for my beginners class where I have been struggling. I now understand more, speak with more confidence and would recommend this set to anyone thinking of learning a language. It is so far ahead of other tape sets that I have listened to and given up on.
Rating: Summary: my two cents Review: I am learning Spanish - it's my first second language. My girfriend is quite proficient, and studying with her was getting nowhere. I've never used any other tapes or books, so I can't compare. All I can say is, reading what others have said I'm glad I found this first. I find that Michel's method is very logical (I'm a programmer) and easy to follow. He does have an accent, and I agree that one would be well advised to spend some time with a native speaker to get the accent, otherwise you will end up sounding very odd copying his accent. I don't find the male student as annoying as others seem to. He's not American anyway, if you listen to him a bit. Basically I find that a language is like dancing - if you don't put aside your shyness and get on the floor, you don't get anywhere. In the same way, if you don't put aside your unwillingness to practice the sounds, and stop worrying about how odd they feel in your mouth, you don't progress as fast - like dancing, it's all muscle memory. I think the male student is a bit afraid of the awkward new sounds and so on. My recommendation is to pause as suggested, work out the answer, practice it till it flows out of your mouth, then unpause and speak along with the students again. If you look at it this way, the male student turns out to be very helpful. Again, I can't compare this with other books/tapes, but for me it's been very, very easy and logical - and fun too. I'm very happy.
Rating: Summary: Not for the Serious Learning-Spanish Student Review: I didn't like these learning Spanish CDs. I wouldn't recommend them to any one that really wants to learn Spanish on his own. To be honest, I think these lessons will do more harm than good. That's because they don't help you develop a real speaking Spanish accent. In fact, they will cause you to develop an awful speaking Spanish accent. Michel Thomas is from France or somewhere. He's definitely not a native Spanish speaker. To make matters worse, he's about 80 or 90 years and he speaks like it and sounds like it. What I mean is that it's very difficult to understand even his English. There are two students on the Michel Thomas course. But they are both beginners -- definitely not someone who you'd want to copy their Spanish pronunciation. I am by no means an authority on how to learn Spanish. But I do know that it is extremely important to take Spanish lessons or Spanish classes from a native speaker or learn from a course recorded by natives. It's the only way to get a Spanish accent that sounds real. If you are a person that learns visually, then I would recommend the Rosetta Stone Spanish course -- www.rosettastone.com If you are a person that likes to learn naturally by learning how to speak Spanish before you can read and write it, then I'd recommend that you learn Spanish with the Learning Like Crazy Spanish plan at www.learningspanishlikecrazy.com
Rating: Summary: Speak Spanish with Michel Thomas Review: I have studied several languages and by far Michel Thomas is the easiest and best language teacher I have encountered. This is an excellent leaning tape.
Rating: Summary: If you want to lean Spanish easily...buy this NOW! Review: I took two years of Spanish in highschool and I could say hello and goodbye...but afer listening to just two of these CD's I can have a conversation in Spanish! I was skeptical reading the cover but I bought it anyway. My husband speaks fluent Spanish...now we can talk together! Michel Thomas has a truely unique way of teaching that helps you retain everything you hear! You don't read or study or memorize anything...you just listen. I don't know how he does it but it works! This is worth every penny! I think I am going to buy the french cd's too!
Rating: Summary: Excellent!! Review: This is a sensational course, you just listen. No books, no assingments and it really works. I can't recommend this course highly enough. There is a two tape/CD course and an eight tape/CD course. The 8 uses the same 2 as the starting section. TRy either but you are likely to decide to go on with the whole thing after experiencing the two. Brilliant man, brilliant teacher. Buena suerte!
