Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down Review: This was an especially gripping story of the life and times of an African-American youth in South Central L.A. I read some of the most interesting chronicles of a young man's life. Kody Scott, later known as Monster, and later, Sanyika Shakur, was inducted into a very dangerous gang called the Crips, whose primarily colors are blue, when he was extremely young in age. He talks about the gruesome crimes he has seen and committed, about the numerous incarcerations, and the light that finally changed him into the man he is today, no longer being violent. I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind. This is one of the best novels I have read in years.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book..... Deserves more than 5 stars Review: I think this book is a really good one. It takes you through the lifes of these kids, that don't have anything else to turn to, and also it explains, how bad the African Americans be treated these days, which is very wrong..
Rating: Summary: Land of the Free, and Home of the Gun Review: This book was assigned to me as a part of a history course at the University of Central Florida. The professor for the course, Dr. Curtis Austin, could not have angered me more by exposing the life of someone I viewed as a my own brother to the white people in the course. He was ridiculed, chastised, and deplored; to my surprise, a black man's life was sincerely understood. I've learned so much about our nation from this novel.I did not speak in class during the sessions in which Shakur was discussed, a decision I've grown to regret. However, the novel itself speaks with an eloquence that I may never understand. My childhood was tough, but the life this human being had to live was dispicable. What nation, so dedicated to the principles America expouses, would allow a child to have to decide between killing and living-- to live for death or destruction. Any American, or for that matter any human being with a conscious must read this novel. My life echoed the violence, drugs, and desparation of decadence. His world is mine own, and Shakur's world is yours; C-nation is the antithesis of American democracy. We're talking about making the world safe for democracy, we better make L.A. safe for children first. Please read this novel.
Rating: Summary: Was good until the end Review: I really enjoyed reading this book but I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for a better ending. I was happy that "Monster Kody" was trying to change his life around but it made me mad that he went back to prison. I think it is sad what these children have to go through. But you can't blame anybody but themselves because they joined the gang knowing that there would be violence involved. Here in Madison there are all wanabe gang members so gangs are nothing but talk. I can't imagine living in California where people don't play around. This book has made me want to read more about the gang life.
Rating: Summary: This is an inspiring book everyone should read. Review: Im a 15 year old and i can really understand what the author is talking about. I have never been in a gang and never plan on being in one but, all people that have peer-pressure or who are in a gang can really relate to this book.It can show all the gang members that they have no future by getting into a gang.
Rating: Summary: heart touching- Review: I think every kid that is thinking or in a gang should read this book. Where I live There are not any gangs, though I know some bangers from nearby cities. Last year I was what you called a wanna-be banger. I had only seen movies and heard stories of what banging is like. As I matured I grew out of this phase. Though I still thought it would be cool to move to Boston or something and join a gang. After reading this extremly touching book I turned my head the other way and felt bad for kids that live in inner-cities that HAVE TO bang to survive. I feel that every young teen that thinks banging is cool should read this and see the trouble banging put Sanyika through. I personally would like to meet this legend and give him a lot of credit for coming out of jail and staying strong, and not banging. Read this book if it is the last thing you do on earth, it will make you change your mind tremendously and really make you think. This book has inspired me in so many ways. Sanyika, thank you.
Rating: Summary: This is a great way to see inside gang life. Review: Monster was a great book, I enjoyed it thoroughly. It let me know what happens when you are in a gang with all the language, drugs, violence, adn sex. It really lets you know about all of the brutallity that he and many others committed and what it is like to be in prison, juvenille hall, and to live in South Central Los Angeles I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to know what it is like in the gang life.
Rating: Summary: this book tells you the real life in south central la Review: I had to read a book for my english class, I chosed this book because the cover was tight. When i started reading this book i was all into it. This book make me realize that gangsters ain't that bad after all, they have heart and feelings too. I hope that people will change through this book and that people dont have to go through what "Monster Kody Scott went through."
Rating: Summary: Kept me from going back to jail Review: After I read Monster Kody, I realized what I was left to in the streets, being in foster homes beaten, orphans, and molested in adopted homes. On the streets I was an original street child telling others many times to go home, because the streets were my home, to them it was fasinating. I ended up in jail in that 4 wall room reading Monster Kody. I will say Monster Kody saved my life by showing me how deep I was getting. I am now in college for computer system engineering. I'm on our local record, Starburst, in Springfield Mass. I've performed hiphop at the united nations chapel in support of the economic human rights campaign, On the criminal Justice committee at Arise For Social Justice in Arise For Social Justice in Springfield Mass. As well the President of the African-American Cultural Society, because Monster Kody taught me that I need to fight a different way. My review of this book is the power that it invested in me to change my life. I must say Monster Kody is a political prisoner, because genocide is political. I loved the part in the book where when he got out of jail on parole and saw how bad the streets became he struck back in defence of the neighborhood, when the cops were only containing the community and allowing the violence and drug dealing to continue. If only we had more brothers to do This work with intelect. Bring back the original Bloods and the Crips that was ment to defend our people mental through education, development, and love. Thank You, MONSTER KODY. MY HERO: I dedicate this rhyme I wrote to you bro "Take away the pain"
