Review: I could not put the book down and I also have not laughed outloud when reading a book in a long long time. This book brought back memories of my childhood since I grew up in Abadan and my dad worked for the same Oil Company. It's hillarious!

Summary: Wonderful, wonderful book
Review: Dumas' memoir is a warm profile of immigrant life in America--it's engaging, relatable (no matter what your heritage) and the kind of book you can't wait to get back to. A terrific read.

Review: This book was such a great read.. I related to all the great stories the author had about being an Iranian in America. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.. It's just one of those books you can't put down.

Summary: Great Entertainment
Review: A witty and poignant account of life as an immigrant in America; the good, bad, and hilarious. As an avid reader, I enjoyed this book more than many best sellers. And my highest praise: it's the first novel in years that I've seen my husband read cover to cover, laughing out loud, that isn't about a sports figure!

Summary: Funny in Any Language
Review: The book was very well-written and entertaining. I passed it along to my 13 year old who enjoyed it very much as well. Although we're American, we both of us identified mightily with much of this book. When my daughter was 6 years old we relocated to the Philippines for two and half years and went from struggling single parent houshold to living in a ritzy neighborhood, with maids, a driver and a swimming pool ... kind of reverse of Dumas.

My Jewish daughter went to a private Catholic school so that I could keep her close to home and have to send her on an hours long bus ride to the American or International school. She was the only American and the only non-Catholic at the school and said she identified very much with Dumas essays.

I am just a few years older than Dumas and enjoyed reading about our common pop culture era ... I admit to being uncomfortable as I read her account, from her point of view, of the "Iranians Go Home" slogans many of us sported in the late '70s/early '80s. I am glad we seem to have risen above that and that, for the most part, similar sentiments have not been shown post-9/11. SHe relates it all in good stride, however.

Her family life is genuinely something to envy ... such a close bunch, and so opposite from the distance of her husband's family.

I highly recommend this funny, quick read to all.

Summary: Fantastic
Review: Artful, funny account. Captures so much truth in so little space. I too made a move from Iran many years ago, and found myself laughing out loud--with joy and familiarty--at so many of these anecdotes. At times, the story's flow is a little jagged, but well worth the read.

Summary: So funny, so real
Review: I laughed out loud through most of the book. I could relate to many of the stories but I would have never imagined describing them in such an amusing way!!! Great Job, Great Stories, Great Humor.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Short, sweet, and very, very funny
Review: Growing up Iranian in America was a strange but wonderful experience for Firoozeh Dumas, or "Fritzy DumbAss" as she was once called by a receptionist in a doctor's office. Her several trips to the US began during an era when most Americans, apparently, didn't quite know where Iran was, exactly. This was quickly followed by the Shah's downfall, the hostage crisis, and the whole Islamic conservative movement. She see her native country through Americanized eyes - and the US through Middle-Eastern eyes - and sees the humor and pathos in both. Dumas manages to make light of the suffering and financial downturns her family experienced during those years - and to emerge prouder still of her father's resilience and determination to provide well for his family. And through it all runs a profound appreciation for her family, for America, and for Iran.
