Rating: Summary: Can volume 3 possibly top "Means of Ascent?" Review: I don't see how it can. I read "Means of Ascent" as soon as it was published. A co-worker and I were both reading it at the same time and we were, in a way relieved we had finished it. Caro's storytelling was so compelling, you couldn't wait to turn the next page, not to mention put it down, when you already know how it ends! My apettite was whetted a few weeks back when C-SPAN2 re-aire their interview with Caro. How can we find out anything about the next volume. I remember Caro saying in an interview (not on C-SPAN) that he had originally planned to write three volumes on LBJ, but after "Means of Ascent" was considering a fourth volume. The question many of us wonder is - when can we expect volume 3? Almost a decade is too long.
Rating: Summary: When is Volume 3 to arrive? Review: Caro recognizes that great and powerful men are not created in a vacuum, but are assisted or hindered by other great men. This book on LBJ includes what is effectively a biography of Coke Stevenson as representing the great complimentary force in this phase of Johnson's life. Caro did the same in Volume I with materials on Sam Rayburn. LBJ was a creature of his times, and Caro shows this to us warts and all.My real question and concern is when will Volume III come out?
Rating: Summary: Compelling capsules of the LBJ years Review: Anyone with the slightest interest in our History MUST read these two volumes. It leaves no question unanswered as to how power in this country works. BEST two books I've ever read in 55 years of reading. Now PLEASE someone out there tell us when volume 3 will appear!!!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: This is a brilliant page-turning book that exposes Johnson for the corrupt, power-hungry sociopath that he was. The man stole a senatorial election. And how he did it is here in great and gripping detail. This book illustrates better than almost anything that the TYPE of person who WANTS to be President is the LAST type of person who SHOULD be president. As U.S. Grant said, "The best man for the job does not go after the job. He waits to be called." Johnson didn't wait to be called to be senator. He went after it so ruthlessly, he ended up stealing the victory from the rightful winner. This is absolutely one of the best books I've ever read. And I've read a boat load of books.
Rating: Summary: Pure Caro Mastery Review: It would seem that in order to put out a volume as well written as Caro's would take quite some time, however 8 years between books seems like an eternity. I read the Power Broker as assigned reading as an udergrad for a public policy course. I liked it so much that I had to get both of the Johnson books and they were both impecabily written. If you have already read both of the Johnson books and are hungering for more Caro then you may try the Power Broker, I think it is the best of all his writings.
Rating: Summary: A fascinating look at midcentury American politics Review: Riveting reading!! Caro is a wonderful writer who makes history read seamlessly and smooth, more like a novel than a true story. Yet, the subject, LBJ, led a life that seems more fictional than not. As the story unfolds, one begins to take sides and root for justice which is not served for years after the period described herein. Caro wisely ends the book with the happy ending of LBJ's opponent who lost the '48 election but won the ultimate prize - the admiration of all Texans and a new family. It is apparent that he also won Caro's admiration, even affection. Coke Stevenson should be the subject of his next book. Thanks a million to Mr Caro for his efforts and marvelous skills!!
Rating: Summary: Excellent, enlightening work on a very dark figure Review: Having read volumes 1 and 2 of this work, I cannot wait for the next volume from Mr. Caro. I am impressed by his ability to shed light on a historical figure who was very good at keeping secrets. As I learn more about the man Lyndon Johnson was, I find myself rethinking my understanding of many of the events of the 1960's and Johnson's role in them. I am disturbed by some conclusions I am arriving at. Mr. Caro leaves me very hungry for more information.
Rating: Summary: The best book, non-fiction or fiction, that I've ever read. Review: Robert Caro is a master storyteller. So, it doesn't matter if you have an interest in Lyndon Johnson, national politics or the subject's Texas heritage. This book is so well done, anyone who appreciates fine writing will love this book. I'm also curious when Mr. Caro plans on delivering Vol. 3 in this trilogy. Does anyone know?
Rating: Summary: The best political biography I have read Review: Robert Caro clearly dislikes LBJ, but cannot help but admire him. His second volume may only cover a short period of time, but it is even stronger than the first and should be on the reading list of any aspiring politician. Caro reveals an awesome political operator who may have taken a few short-cuts, but was in many ways ahead of his time. He clearly achieved a great deal for the people of his district and state. Where he was corrupt, he was just more skilled at it than others in a corrupt system. Like a moth drawn to light the reader cannot escape the charm of this giant of a man. Caro writes that he will truncate the rest of LBJ's life into one volume which seems a shame, but if that is to be the case can we have it soon please.
Rating: Summary: This series is so incredible!!!! Review: I have read both the Means of Ascent and the Path to Power. When a friend suggested I read the first one, I really didn't think I would like it. However, just the opposite was true. I couldn't put it down. However, I have been waiting for volume three which I thought was in the works. Does anyone know anything about this? I feel like I've been at the edge of a cliff for six or seven years. (Okay that may be a little drastic, but I have been on the lookout for the next book for that long). Thanks for your info
