Rating: Summary: Competently written Review: Nader is solid and focused. He is correct on the issues. This book describes his campaign which the media did not cover. It is not one of those books you can't put down as it lacks that certain spark. Nonetheless I think it should be read for the sake of our Democracy which is in deep trouble.
Rating: Summary: Nader just tells the truth Review: Unlike, I suspect, many of the negative reviewers, I actually read the book. Nader reveals what's behind the major parties rhetoric, sound bites and photo opts and its appalling. They are essentially owned by corporate donors, with many giving large sums to both parties. Enormous barriers are erected by the major parties to deny ballot access to third parties, thereby forcing voters to choose between bad and worse. Many enviromental, union and feminist organizations sell out their members interests for "access" to democratic politicians, while having little actual influence. Nader is without a doubt the most honest individual in the political arena today . Nader and the GreenParty are inspiring because they remain determined and optimistic in their efforts to build a viable third party
Rating: Summary: America, You missed your chance.... Review: All I seem to hear on this review page is the fact that Nader was the spoiler and at least the Democrats were the lesser of two evils. Gimmie a break! What do you have then at the end of the day? You still have evil. Upon reading this book I learned a lot about how America is, where it's headed, and how it could be. I don't agree with everyting Mr. Nader says, but most of it. When you read this book, and you want to write a review, please stick to what he's talking about, not about his spoiler status. It's amazing, here he is trying to improve this country, and his countrymen label him a spoiler. That's America... After listend to Gore, Bush, Buchannan, and now Nader, I can honestly say after reading this book, I learned a whole lot about politics and what the people in Power will do to ones who try to change it.
Rating: Summary: best book ever Review: This is probably the best work of non-fiction I have ever read. I strongly recomend it to everyone and wish I could give it 8 or 10 stars.
Rating: Summary: great book (and I actually it too) Review: ...This IS a great book. Not because im some pro-Nader freak, but because his arguments are interesting and well structured. Nader doesn't just throw a bunch of generalizations in, he has solid support for everything he says. Those who claim the book should be titled "How to Tell MY Truth...." should realize that he DOES tell THE truth. Naturally he does incorporate some of his own opinions, but that isn't what the book is about.Ralph Nader is a 'spoiler'?! How hilarious. While he did attract votes from some Democrats AND Republicans, he attracted many votes from people who otherwise would not have voted. Bottom line: Its a good, although obviously controversial book; read it for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Very interesting book Review: I can't help but notice most of the critical comments don't really mention anything about the book itself. I suppose when one has the righteous anger only the followers of the Messiah, Al Gore can have against the forces of darkness, one really doesn't need to read the book. A pity, really, since the book itself is a pretty good read. Unlike what some previous reviewers claim, you can tell Nader is still bitter over his treatment - but even more than that, you can see his bitterness over injustice done to others, be they low-wage workers who the Clintonistas ignored or Bill Bradley, the former senator who was savaged and slandered by Al Gore and his operatives in the Democratic primary. It's also revealing to read about his treatment after the election by members of the media-industrial complex. Whatever liberalism once existed in the media, it has now become a fossilized limousine upper-class liberalism, welcoming Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey with open arms while becoming more and more hostile towards the ordinary citizenry, no matter what race or gender. But the thing I came away with was a complete dismissal of the "ego-trip" candidacy theory. One gets the idea that Nader felt like this was the only thing he could do - since Washington insiders had treated his issues as irrelevant since the 1980s, and the Democrats had become the other party of global business, pushing trade agreements that had nothing to do with free trade and everything to do with corporate control and shoving the vast majority of Americans down the economic ladder, what else could he do? The '80 and '90s benefitted the upper classes, but the majority of Americans were working harder and harder to simply maintain their standard of living. If Al Gore was going to spend all of his time trying to blur the tiny differences between him and Dubya (and I saw an ad running in Washington having Gore standing for "family values", censoring the Internet, and lower taxes), then surely someone should have stood up and mentioned all the issues that the major party candidates tried so hard to avoid. The moment Democrats start talking about cutting payroll taxes for the poor and middle classes instead of capital gains taxes for the rich, the moment they stop being slaves of the content owners on intellectual property issues, the moment they talk honestly about Chapter 11 in NAFTA, then I'll start listening to them.
Rating: Summary: A man of principal Review: Ralph Nader has dedicated his life to to the betterment of the human condition. I understand and recognize criticism of Nader regarding his role in the 2000 election, and back then I was annoyed at him for it. After reading this book, however, I realize that he was doing the right thing. This book reveals Nader as being largely selfless and under no illusion as to how things work in today's world - as well as how they *should* work. Some of his criticisms of the existing corporate and political establishment are eye-opening. The solutions proposed seem so right. I'm voting Green next time around.
Rating: Summary: Wake Up America Review: It doesn't matter whether you are a Green, Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Liberal, or anything in between. If you are an American, you can't possibly condone the appalling pratices that our government, big business, and big media get away with - how we as voters are being manipulated, lied to, and used for the interests of a select few wealthy and powerful. Nader has uncovered these truths with a style that is compelling and inspiring. Instead of just complaining about "the system", he constantly reminds readers that it is up to us to make effective changes in our society and how it is governed. Love him or hate him, the ideas he conveys are good for all Americans, and will restore Democracy to a nation that has forgotten the meaning of the word.
Rating: Summary: Great book, great ideas... Review: I'm 20 years of age (not a rich yuppy as one reviewer might assume) and was a close follower of the Ralph Nader 2000 campaign. His politics are about empowerment, democracy, and justice. How can you disagree with that? If you are doubtful of Ralph's intentions in running for president, if you were with him all the way, or if you're just looking for hope in light of the current state of America, you'll gain a lot from this book. Don't believe the spoiler allegations! Read this book and you'll see that the real spoilers are those that are quick to make these accusations. This book is one third diary, one third republicrat/corporate political system critique, and one third looking ahead to the future of grassroots politics. And, as always, Ralph Nader backs himself up with plenty of facts and first person experiences. Even if you're not a Ralph Nader fan, this book is worth the read for its revealing look at American politics. You don't believe that we can have more than one and a half choices? Just look at Canada - they had five people in their presidential debates. America has a strong history of third parties and movements for justice. Ralph offers intellect, experience, and an unmatchable strive for a better America that will leave you with higher expectations, a renewed desire to do your part, and hope that this movement for social justice and democracy will soon overcome.
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC -- GO, RALPH, GO!!! Review: Ralph Nader has written another book that should be required reading in school! When you've done the research and read the facts, you know he's telling the truth: America is becoming more and more controlled by corporatations and other special interests -- and that control oozes right into the election process. I attended some of the super rallies in 2000 -- thousands and thousands of people there cheering him on, listening with rapt attention to his "politics of joy and justice!" The media barely covered these rallies! Can you believe it? When Bush and Gore were getting a couple thousand people at their gatherings? Isn't that big news? But the news is strongly corporate-controlled, and those mega-corporations don't want a third party in there messing with their master plan... It's not hype -- it's not paranoia -- it's the truth. Just the truth. And isn't it about time for that? You owe it to yourself to read this book.
