Rating: Summary: DeMeo is a Genius Review: The book For the Sins of My Father is a biographical novel by Albert DeMeo. Albert DeMeo wrote this book in a descriptive and emotional way that kept me interested and asking for more. It is in a different perspective than all of the other mafia stories I have read. It depicts the home life of mafia killer Roy DeMeo and his loving care towards his family and son. This showed a side of the man that you would never have known by looking at his record as a mafia crime boss. He tried hard to keep his family out of his business and away from the possible dangers. "For the first twelve years of my life, my father worked to keep our family in a glass bubble. As long as we stayed inside that bubble, we would be safe." Roy DeMeo's wish was for his son to never follow in his footsteps. I think the theme of this book is to always take advantage of the times you have with loved ones because you never know what can happen. Albert DeMeo depicts the downside that the mafia life offers. He describes the many times that he hasn't slept at night until his father came home, and the constant worrying when they weren't together. The fear of losing someone close to you and the agonizing pain that goes along with it. I recommend this book to any reader that is slightly interested in the organized crime life because it is told from a different perspective. It shows the close and loving relationship between a father and his son. I enjoyed reading every page of this book and I want you to experience the same excited that I did.

Rating: Summary: A Mafia Hit Review: The Godfather, The Sopranos, Godfellas, all classic movies that basically display America's fascination with mob life. What do American's like more than mob stories? True stories! There is no better combination than a true story about mob life. In Albert DeMeo's book, "For the Sins of My Father," he dives into his dark past of being the son of one of the Gambino families top killing machines, Roy DeMeo. From the days of carrying a gun as a young child to his teen years of running the family business and dealing with prostitutes, he faces everything that the mafia has to offer. Albert never gets to live the life of young boy , instead he spends countless hours covering for his father after he became a made man in the mob. Although mobsters seem to live a glamorous life, Albert DeMeo describes his father's rise and fall in organized crime. Albert goes into great detail about his father's attempts to escape the law in other countries and how Roy DeMeo eventually dies by the gun. Albert's life was deeply affected after his father's death, from the times when the FBI harass him to his own mental struggles. What is great about this mob tale is that Albert eventually ends up on top. Although he deals with tough times , he rebuilds a better life in which he is an accomplished author and on living a much healthier lifestyle. But I strongly suggest if you want a peak into the world of Al Capone, John Gotti, or Sammy the Bull read this page turning memoir of the lifestyles of the rich and the powerful.

Rating: Summary: Amazing memoir Review: This book is an excellent illustration of the effect that one's choices have on his or her loved ones. It is amazing that the author has been able to salvage his life after the hell he had to endure in his childhood and early adulthood, and I pray he will be able to find some peace and true happiness. The book is spell-binding. It is a good choice not only for those interested in crime literature; readers interested in biographies of people overcoming obstacles and surviving by their wits and internal strength will love it.
Rating: Summary: interesting but a whitewash Review: This is a book about the notorious criminal Roy De Meo, written by his son Al. In the beginning, we are treated to all the son's warm memories of his father. He touches upon his father's crimes, but tends to gloss over them, as "business". According to the book Murder Machine, De Meo was responsible for over 100 murders, most committed in a rather grisly way. The way Al addresses these is to state "nothing was proven" or "the witness was lying" or "the author lied, since he called my father fat, and he obviously wasn't". This is akin to saying that Bin Laden wasn't really bad; he was good to his children. While i do feel somewhat sorry for the author, it is important to realize that he was very involved in his father's business, and in fact, inherited huge sums of money from it. I would highly advise anyone interested in this story to first read "Murder Machine" by Jerry Capeci. In the end, I wonder how Al would have felt if one the murders committed by his father was one his own family members. Perhaps he would not have been so quick to gloss over it!
Rating: Summary: Fatherhood and the Mafia Review: This is a fantastic book. I was put off at first, because there are so many "I was in the Mafia" or "I knew somebody in the Mafia" books on the market. Most of these are full of bad writing and uninteresting storylines. For the Sins of My Father is far superior to those KMart paperbacks. It tells the simple story of a loving father and a good kid, with a dangerous and complex criminal lifestyle always hovering over the relationship. This is one of the few personal memoirs that you simply cannot put down. America loves mobsters. We are absolutely fascinated with these criminals, a fascination fed by Hollywood. Everyone has seen the Godfather, Goodfellas, and the Sopranos. They are mysterious, dangerous, and very sexy to a public that does not understand them. They don't understand that the five New York families of the 60's, 70's, and 80's represented one of the most ruthless criminal organizations in American history. They corrupted the government and committed every crime in the book. That's the reality, not noble criminal princes living in big mansions just wanting to look after their family members. That's an invention. No where is reality more evident than in this book. DeMeo's father was a rising Capo in the Genovese crime family. He was, by most accounts, a very smart and violent criminal. The numbers vary, but over the years he no doubt killed dozens of people. All of this was hidden from his family. To them, he was a caring man who treated them very well. He provided for them and rose them very well. For a time, as DeMeo describes it, their existence was the American dream. However, crime does not pay. Eventually, DeMeo's father fell out of favor with the new leadership. At the same time, the government was coming down hard on the New York mob. The family life quickly became a nightmare, full of murder threats and firearms. It takes a toll on the father, who soon becomes distant. Through all this, DeMeo tries to live a normal childhood, an existence that comes to an end when his father is found in a car trunk, shot seven times. That's the reality, as DeMeo tells us. His insights into family and Mafia life are fascinating and ring with truth. The story actually becomes more interesting after his fathers' death, as DeMeo is absolutely harrassed by a zealous FBI and attorney general, which goes out of it's way to make DeMeo's life a living hell. Even when DeMeo grows up, he is tortured by his fathers violent past, especially after the publication of a new book detailing the crimes of his father. It's great reading, and DeMeo's descent into madness is heartbreaking. It ends on a somewhat high note, with DeMeo making the first step in rebuilding his life. Just a well told story. Don't miss this one.
Rating: Summary: Way more than a regular mafia book! Review: This is an outstanding view of mafia life told by the son of mafia legend Roy DeMeo. In this touching story of a father and son, Al DeMeo tells the story of the struggles of growing up and living with a mobster father. Even afer his father passes Al still struggles with the past and the pesky federal govt. This is by far one of the best books of mafia life I have ever read, and I have read quite a few. I loved this book and would recomend it to everyone. This is way more than your average mafia book, it is a touching story of a father and son.

Rating: Summary: A FATHER WHO TRIED TOO HARD Review: This young man does have an interesting story to tell. In fact my wife read this book first and liked it so well, she suggested I read it. I concur. Albert tells his family's story, but particularly about his father who was a wonderful dad and at the same time a part of the mafia who did such a good job of rackeetering he continually improved his financial situation and moved up within his organization. This scheme of things eventually got out of control and you will learn how his father really led two lives; a loving family man and a proved killer where one "hit" led to his demise.
