Rating: Summary: Strong with American spirit. Review: The story of the Delany sister is the story of postbelum America to the present, told in a highly personal and touching manner. The two sisters, in their own words, tell their story, which is the story of this country, with such depth, love and strength that I felt I was the one having a personal conversation with them. This is oral history at its best.
Rating: Summary: Excelent. A must read for all U.S. history classes. Review: These sisters walk you through, in their owe voices, 100 years of history. With their incredible stories, that will touch you deeply, they remind you of the strength you should have to get through life. They have become heros with their humor and courage that carried them through some of the toughest times in America : racism, sexism and poverty. They understand what hard work, education, independence and a good attitude can bring: fulfillment, happiness and a healthy, healthy heart. Although the book is often listed under African-American and women's studies, it should be found in every classroom in the country and required reading for all U.S. history classes. There are no better history lessons than those who have lived to tell it in their own voices.
Rating: Summary: Don't wait until YOU'RE one hundred to read this book Review: These two women have literally seen it all. They were alive before women could vote, blacks could "breath in white air" and the car was invented. Somehow they went to one of the top ten institutions in the country (Columbia University) and became a doctor and an educator making history along the way. They've survived Jim Crow, The Civil Rights movement, the Black Power Movement, the Million Man and Woman marches, and their father was a former slave. They are indeed the best primary source of infomation about black history. They lived though the racist turmoil of five generations, fought through it, succeeded in spite of it and this book shows future generations how to change it. Well sisters, there is a little sister listening and ready to learn how to get to where you are and have been. This book enables me to carry the torch. Bessie we miss you, keep watch in heaven!

Rating: Summary: Racist Review: This book had a lot of racism in it, & although it was very informational on our american history, Bessie Delany didn't need to be so racist against whites in this book. But i kind of enjoyed it, but it was the best book i've ever read.
Rating: Summary: American History Review: This book is a great book and I would recomend it to someone who is interested in American History and how Jesus was a major role in the lives of some very important people. This book showed me that no matter what you go through it will be OK, especially when you have God on your side. The Delany sisters both have a title in history, The first black teacher at the high school level and the second black women to practice dentistry. They both have a extraodinary story and I would recomend it for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book is one of the most learning and inspiring books I have ever read. I come from Denmark and therfore I am not so familiar with Black history, this book gave me the oppurtunity to learn it from a first person perspective. Thank you for writing this wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: BAD Review: This book is the worst book EVER. It was so boring I wanted to throw up. I hate the book so much I would rather die, in fact, I think I'll just go do that. This book, is, BAD. I was forced against my will to read it.
Rating: Summary: Delany Sisters - A fun and exciting read Review: This book starts off slow, but it really is fascinating! It is is such a fun book to read, it is filled with so much information about history but also gives you a glimpse at life in the South during the Reconstruction and through the days of segretation. It really opened my eyes. Great book!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful example of commitment to family and God Review: This book was absolutely delightful! My wife and I are both very committed Christians, and this book was a real encouragement to us both. Our country is starting to crumble because people thing they're so "advanced" that they can do away with God and the family. This book reminded me of why my wife and I are so committed to Christ, and to our family. This book reminded me that all you need is faith in Christ, and a strong family, and nothing, not even the Great Depression, segregation, lynching, Jim Crow laws, "Rebby Boys", and a country that hates you...none of this can take away your joy when your joy comes from Jesus.
