Rating: Summary: Oh Puh-leez Review: This book is a piece of fluff. I wish I'd read the back flap of the book jacket to discover that it was written by an editor from People magazine. Either Christopher Anderson was doing what newspaper journalists are taught, which is to write to the eighth grade level, or this guy simply can't write. He can write but I don't think he's a very good author. Having said that...This book is practically a propaganda puff, feel good, piece for the right, and I'm not even a leftist. I'm a conservative. We get it that George LOVES Laura to pieces and that she is the redeemer of his misguided life but puh-leez where is some of the conflict that surely has transpired in their marriage? There's a few allusions to it but mainly expressed in nominal two or three sentences. For instance, there must have been MAJOR battles about his alcoholism but strangley, there's a lot of detail missing about that. Their children are obviously angry and defiant and yet there are no clues into what could cause such rebellion in their children. Christopher Anderson had written something like 23 books, I get the idea that to him writing biographical books is no less taxing than writing celebrity articles for People maganzine. I will give him credit though for chronicling W's youthful partying escapades in adequate detail.
Rating: Summary: A Hard Read Review: This book was an uncomfortable read, but I felt something that should be read in order to truly understand this marriage. You really get the sense of how much Laura really changed George and how he probably would not have even been a governor without her. God really used her to change him around. He still has rough edges, but he still did a 180. I gave it a four instead of a five because of all the ugly incidents that were dragged out and it's possible some of them may be embellishments. I would not recommend this book to anyone who would rather not read anything that puts President in bad light, truth or no.
Rating: Summary: Good Light Read Review: This is an even-handed story of the marriage of George and Laura Bush. They've both had their problems and overcome them. It is a true love story. They really compliment each other. It is not a PR piece. There are things in here they would probably prefer were not. I would recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Pack of lies Review: This is the best fiction account I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: What you don't read before the inauguration Review: This was my first book about W. It was an eye opener, but then we should be used to hearing about the men in the White House and their escapades before or during! The story of W's youth is picturesque and entertaining. I felt as if Bar was in the same room trying to rein in that youngster. What a handful! Not just as a young boy, but up to age 30. Laura did manage to get his feet on the ground to a point, but you can't change a person unless they are willing to change. He had much to change, and he admitted it! Gives credit where credit is due. The story of his love for Laura is heartwarming and wonderful. I enjoyed reading about his family and the previous generations. They had such an influence on him and the person he finally became. To think this brash, outspoken and often rude person became our 43rd president who is still outspoken to a point, but so very focused on his goals and that of our country, never afraid to speak of his faith in God, it is reassuring to know he is in the White House.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully written Review: Unlike "Laura" by Antonia Felix -- which is shallow, and "borrows" from newspaper clippings -- "George and Laura" is beautifully written from beginning to end. It never loses its punch, and provides a wonderful portrait of two special people, "warts" and all -- especially in the case of "W." in his earlier years. Buy it; you will not be disappointed. T.D. Rating: Summary: Love Bush or Not-- A Must Read Review: Whether you like Bush or not, this is a must read. Mr. Andersen lets you into the real life of George and Laura that has shaped who they are as people, as president and first lady. He lays out all that shaped their lives and lets you decide for yourself. Not too many politicians would let this information out about their past, although the Bushes didn't give any information about themselves, close family members and friends didn't feel that they could not speak. I love the cover and the picture of them dancing together. You can see in their eyes the love and respect they have for each other. This is the picture of us, everyday Americans. We love, work and live our lives with all its ups and downs. We make mistakes, but we are passionate about our country. That is why we are Americans. George and Laura show the best of us inspite of our failings. As George Bush said, "even a C student at Yale, can become President." Well, even an former alcoholic can change and be a strong president with the right woman by his side.
Rating: Summary: A Winner! Review: Whilst certain reviews seem to have been entered here simply to attract sales for forthcoming books, I feel it right to redress the balance and enter a review that refers specfically to Andersen's work. Writing a doctorate thesis at Oxford University on American Politics from 1950-present, has giving me the opportunity to study a wide variety of secondary and primary sources. I am not one to give praise freely, but this work has finally put a missing piece in the puzzle. Andersen's masterful reconstruction of the Bush marriage has provided a sensitive yet penetrating account of the characterisitics required to obtain the presidency. This book offers a unique insight into the Bush marriage and how their private lives have effected their decisions on the national stage: it is a must for any serious scholar or simply for those with an interest in the human condition. It is a breath of fresh air to find a book that one is willing to continue reading outside of the library.
Rating: Summary: Good Light Read Review: Why is Bush making a book about his romance? I want to read more about his deep religious faith and how that drives him in his relationship with Laura, but instead we get a romance novel with a few historical facts thrown in. Come on George. You can do better than that. You're the leader of the free world, so show us your undying faith for the big guy upstairs. That's what's really driving you I bet.
