Rating: Summary: READ THIS BOOK! Review: Yes, it's written in a slightly partisan tone. Yes, it contains lurid tales of Shrub's indiscretions. The important thing that this book shows is how Bush likes to twist things to suit him -- his condemnation of property in order to use the space to build a taxpayer-financed stadium for the Texas Rangers; his evasion of the draft; his years of drug and alcohol abuse; his blatant racism; and the list goes on. In the wake of a stolen election, it becomes even more crucial that the American people learn the truth about G.W. Bush.
Rating: Summary: Tale of two Georges Review: Mr Hatfield tells the story of W the drunken student, front man, struggling sole and trickster. When he ran against Richards for Texas Governor, he purports to speak of issues that are important to him. His platform however closely resembles what the legislature had been struggling over in it's prior session. This is the story of a person living for deception and self agrandizement. He has won elections by sympathy because his more competant opponents can't stand him and despise his shallowness. The author draws our attention to his priority for returning favors to his supporters at the expense of the greater public. Learn about his Texas tax reform to benefit his crony from The Rangers, learn about the land deal when the Rangers management took 10 acres of land by immenent domain.Read about his insider trading incident with improper and untimely disclosure. Whoever said ignorance is bliss? I say history repeats itself.
Rating: Summary: Chilling - A Must Read Review: I couldn't put this book down. I very much appreciated the author's new forward - that alone was a great read! Anyway, I agree - if this book hadn't been squashed and given the press it was promised..., this election may not have been the debacle it became. THANK YOU SOFT SKULL PRESS for taking a chance on this book. I do indeed hope that it makes its way back on the NYT Best Seller List, and that it fosters the discussion it deserves.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing and Disturbing... Review: I haven't seen this sort of in-depth investigative reporting seen since the Watergate scandal of the early 1970's. Hatfield gives us a taste of what "Bush the Man" will mean as President of the United States...and it is a very disturbing picture indeed. In this latest edition, the author details his own experiences in the Texas legal system, where he was arrested and convicted of a felony while the rich perpetuator of the scheme was never even investigated by the state. Based on these experiences, Hatfield asserts that George W. Bush is a benefactor of a very lopsided system of justice, a system where minorities, the poor and just about anyone without the right connections goes to jail while the members of the Texas elite get away with murder. You'll have to read the book yourself to see if you agree with Mr. Hatfield!
Rating: Summary: Finally some details about the mysterious Dubya Review: I now know a lot more about George W's record as governor of Texas and his true positions on issues such as taxes, health care, and the environment after having read Fortunate Son. I learned much more about what Bush really stands for from this book than I learned from all 3 debates combined. I can understand why he's always so evasive though... answering is definitely not in his best interest. Dubya's record in Texas pretty much speaks for itself, and that wouldn't change whether Fortunate Son had been written by a Pulitzer Prize winner or a so-called "paroled felon."
Rating: Summary: Get Power brokers out of D C Review: As a devoted conservative I found this book worth reading. It has a lot of liberal bias, but the information regarding G W's life should be investigated by any voting person and this author has done an excellent investigative job. Washington DC and both parties have become so corrupt, voters are turning away from the polls. We need to educate ourselves about all people running for office, this book helps. Take time to carefully read this book and decide for yourself based on what kind of person you want in the white house.
Rating: Summary: it's back Review: Having heard bits and pieces about this book in the press I was very interested to read it. My perception in the press was that it was an attack on Mr. Bush. I found instead that it was a very even handed biography. It certainly humanized the man and often times made him out to be a very competent leader. In my opinion it's in Bush's best interest to let people read this book
Rating: Summary: The first analysis of the real "W" Review: Wow, this hard hitting book should be read by every American, whether or not they intend to vote in next year's election. How is it that we have allowed George W. Bush to be within a few steps of the White House, without really knowing anything about him? What's wrong with us? I appreciate this author's detail and precision, and, after reading the book, believe I know all I need to know about "W" and whether he is capable of leading this great nation--NOT. One little piece of advice, and I hate it when people do this to me, but you'll be mad at yourself if don't read ahead to the Afterword (after you've gotten a little background in the first 3-4 chapters). "W's" daddy and the CIA and crooked judges, etc. can't get him out of this one.... "W" belongs in the Big House, not the White House. Very enlightening.
Rating: Summary: A Well Documented Account Review: I have just finished reading Fortunate Son and have perused most of the reviews here. I am noticing that the negative reviews focus on discrediting the author. To them I say: Go ahead and pore through his well-documented sources and pick them apart...then come back and discredit based on fact.
I found the book to be surprisingly fair to Bush from the beginning to my surprise. At times I felt drawn to Bush like I wanted to have a beer with him! I am outraged that the first run of this book was actually burned though. And the "suicide" issue is highly suspicious at best. I challenge the Republicans to respond to the facts in this biography intead of focusing on the author. Many good books have been written by convicts. What's the point?
I give a Four instead of a Five star review because the AWOL issue wasn't adequately addressed. I would give it a 4 1/2 if I could!
Rating: Summary: A Friend made me read it... Review: Well I have been argueing with a friend regarding the facts in the Swift Vets book and he told me I had to read this book and gave me a copy... Well not much changed, I view both books much as I do a Moore documentary... We know they will be biased from the get go.. I was however diapointed in this book in that I found it very difficult to check the "facts" it presented. As an acedemic, fact checking is important, that is why I have to give it the lowest rating..
