Rating: Summary: Great Inspirational Story Review: Ms. Parker tells a no-holds-barred, uncomprimising look at her life as a welfare case and how she turned it around. Kudos to you, Ms. Parker, on both your book and your life. Worth reading for everyone especially those who are seeing the black conservative movement swelling and want to know why.
Rating: Summary: A valid if misinformed view of affairs. Review: One cannot simply dismiss the sheer power of Parker's story. After all, any corperate clone could tell sing to you to importance of "one good testimonial". And this has all the earmarks of a doozie. Needless to say, a testimonial rooted in the cultural stereotypes and myths of welfare does little to shed light on the true power/political issues touched on by Parkers book.In her book, Parker uses the social stereotypes of the "welfare queen" to draw on conservative readers. Then through various chapters that portray a life that is almost to crazy to believe (almost mind you) we see Parker professing that the power of faith transformed her life. Give me a break. From a sociological standpoint, one can clearly see that the "welfare queen" myth is a ploy used by conservative politicians to demonize the welfare system. Moreover, the minute number of people that defraud the welfare system (and the money they collect) does not compare to the billions of dollars that white collar crime cost the American taxpayer every year. Or the simple fact that the Government allows multinational corperations to exploit domestic and foreign workers by paying low wages and denying and type of job security (a development that directly effects the job market at home). Hello...does anyone smell the stench of neo-colonialization? Also, Parker's book says nothing about the reasons behind the rise of the Urban-Underclass circa 1970----a development that was brought on by powerful conservative business owners that used their political and finaincial power to flee urban environments (and close down city based factories in search of cheaper labor), and leave behind a spatially mismatched and bound workforce. In closing, the welfare system is supposed to be used as a public safety net. Accordingly, studies show that the majority of people who benefit from welfare are children, and WHITE women. In addition, the data show that the majority of people who are on welfare use it for 1-3 years and leave its rolls. In other words, don't buy into Ms. Parker's hype. Is this a great transformation testimonial? Yes, it is. But does it accurately portray the historical and contemporary needs/causes of welfare and urban poverty....no it does not.
Rating: Summary: What Would Jesus Do? He would help the poor. parker=sin Review: Parker in this book says, sink or swin, and don't ask me to help you learn how to swim. That was somebody else's job, and if they failed, you deserve to fail also. She is greedy, and is trying to pull others into her greed. Poor blacks, all poor, beware. This is not your ticket. Parker is obviously an intelligent human (though she lacks Christian morals and empathy). She has written a book and gotten herself out of poverty. But what about the disabled and truely disadvantaged? Once again, Parker says sink or swim. And if you are sinking, tough luck, one less stupid person in the gene pool. Furthermore, she discriminates against all religions save Christianity, and thinks that everything from social security to schools should be private. Rather than spend money on this book, use that money to donate to a hunger organization. In America, the are almost 2 million people who die of hunger every year. Once again, Parker says sink or swim. Do you think that if Parker was not wealthy now that she would still hold these same values? Jesus gave everything he had for his neighbor. Jesus was a Socialist. Jesus asks us not to judge, Jesus askes us not to store up treasures on earth, Jesus asks us to love only one God, and that is the Lord, not money. If you are a Christian, with a one on one relationship with God, he will tell you that this is not the answer.
Rating: Summary: Insightful approach to save conservative ideals Review: Star Parker is a invigorating paragon of the conservative movement. Her spirit shows in her wonderful book. She not only gave an account of her welfare life but many of her friends, and it became obvious to me how the system has failed for many years now. She also mentioned the way liberals have only helped the welfare problem by handing out money, decreasing the insentive of people to work. She is a sole believer that we are all Americans regardless of race and should be treated that way. Racism has gone both ways and needs to be stopped. Her ideas are so simple regarding race problems, welfare, etc. I definitely recommend this book not only to learn a bit more about the welfare system but to be reinvigorated in the conservative movement.
Rating: Summary: She's embarassing Review: Star Parker should be ashamed of herself. She has completely lost touch with her identity. After reading this book I came away with the impression that she hates her own race and buys into the stereotype against her own. She puts herself on a soap box like she's the answer to it all and anyone that does not agree with her is less than deserving. She doesn't realize that she was blessed enough to not get thrown in jail for all of the times she broke the law. She believes the hype about african americans in prision are all guilty. Her race should be ashamed of her!!!!!!!!!!! Mrs. Clarence Thomas. Plus she brags about how she married white like it's some type of gift from god. He may be a nice man but she fails to realize that he was looking for a warm bed and a hot meal. Star the laughs on you.
Rating: Summary: Believe in God and Yourself and You'll be in Good Shape Review: Star's book is a wonderful example of what happens when people finally start adhering to the objective moral order. There are things in this book that the let's pretend lewd left don't want you to know. The major thing being that you do better when you do for yourself. I think that the reviewers who put down Ms. Parker are suffering from a severe case of guilty conscience.

Rating: Summary: One Transformation Used Against Millions Review: Starr perverts a beautiful transformation of an individual life. Her transformation could be used to produce fruit by giving life to others in the situation from which she arised. However, she turns that transformation into a platform for self exaltation. Simultaneously, Parker reinforces negative stereotypes and stigma of a group of people who need the understanding, compassion, and healing that Jesus offered Star. As for her analysis of welfare reform. She is obviously not a trained social scientist. For example, states with the lowest welfare payments have the highest out of wedlock birth rates. Furthermore, the largest subsidies are given to corporations under the title of "corporate bail outs." Government subsidies are the name of the American game and Corporations receive the biggest welfare payments. Finally, I was a long-term welfare recipient who used welfare to get my college degree, get off welfare, and then attend graduate school. Now, I teach college and help other mother on welfare overcome the low wage labor market through education. Welfare never made me lazy, welfare gave me a chance to escape poverty and the low-wage dead end labor market. It is sad too hear Parker use her transformation for personal gain and national popularity (within one group). It is too bad that Parker doesn't use her words to highlight how Jesus offered Himself to her in the midst of her "circumstances" and exalt the Lord's mercy and offer that same mercy to the group of people that she comes from! Star should remember that the Bible says "those who exalt themselves will be humbled."
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: The hideous underbelly of the Liberal Great Society is revealed for all to see. Star Parker courageously tells the truth, a truth very unpalatable to many. She shows great courage and wisdom in her story. God Bless her!
