Rating: Summary: Neat and precise! Review: Even though I'm a Hatfield through my mother's family, and I've heard Devil Anse Hatfield stories all my life, I never really understood why and how the feud began. This book has helped put it all together for me. Devil Anse was nasty when he had to be and his son, Cap, was even worse than he was. I wanted the story to never end. I recommend it to anyone who likes a solid story.
Rating: Summary: Good job Popeye! Review: I grew up around the tales of Devil Anse Hatfield because Dr. Hatfield happens to be my grandfather as well. They way he told them to me when I used to sit on his lap is exactly as they are portrayed in this book. I was reluctant at first to read it, because his storytelling is so vivd and I didn't think the page would capture that. It has, and I'm proud to see such a meticulously researched account of my ancestors being praised as it should. My grandfather put an infinite amount of work into this account, history buffs enjoy!
Rating: Summary: The Devil's grandson is an excellent writer! Review: I have read this book and I'll have to say that it is meticulously researched and exciting to dig into. In spite of the tales I've always heard of a hillbillly feud that included senseless murders and underhanded behavior, this book tells the human side of the story, free of exaggeration, of a man born in the frontier of Appalachia. I liked this hardback!
Rating: Summary: It's really interesting Review: I never knew about this side of American history, and I would suspect that these types of feuds were fairly common during the time period. However, this family-feud seems extremely excessive and horrorific; and there were inner-state complications after the gunfire ended which left feud survivors with extreme anxiety of being carted off across the border to face the gallows. I believe Coleman Hatfield should be honored for bringing this story to light.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good history Review: I never really knew that much about the real facts about the feud. Now that I've read this, I understand it a little more. The Hatfields were a tough bunch. I think the writers did a good job in painting a word picture for me. I have decided to stay clear of Logan County and the region around the Tug River -- it's way too dangerous. As for the book, it was pretty darn good. Devil Anse was certainly a devil.
Rating: Summary: Hatfield McCoy Feud Continues Review: I read this hardback book, and I have to candidly admit this biography is great! I love pioneer and American history, and this work vivedly portrays the mountain life of Appalachia in the 1840s through the turn of the century. These Hatfield family members were tough hombres, and the McCoys were hardheaded as well. The thing that makes this a real unusual story for its time is the inter-state rivalry, the WV Hatfields and the KY McCoys. For instance, Cap Hatfield, the son of Devil Anse, spent the rest of his life worried about being deported to the Kentucky side of the Tug River. The time period is expertly displayed through Dr. Hatfield's prose, and the words of Robert Spence. In all, this is a magnificent biography of historical proportions. Although I suppose the chances are slim, I still hope that this work earns literary accolades and a solid place in the library of great American biographies. I recommend this book for everyone who wants to know more about this country and its people.
Rating: Summary: Yeowza! Review: I thought this was a good book and a wonderful biography on an often misunderstood individual. This book has a great deal of insider information. Thank you Coleman!
Rating: Summary: A great Read! Review: I will have to say that this is the most thorough book on the Hatfield & McCoy feud that I've read; and it also gives a wonderful description of the family patriarch, Devil Anse. It describes the rugged, whooly hills of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky and makes you feel like you are living in the days of clanish behavior and family tension. In my opinion, this book is well written, along with end notes. I recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Cap Review: i would just like to say that Cap Hatfield was not horrible like most of the reviews said he was. Johnse Hatfield once said if it wasnt for Cap we'd all have been dead. He did what any of us wouold do if iot meant protecting are family. The book even says that one. Also, Logan County isnt bad these days. Neeither is the Tug. So you dont have to stay clear of it. The book was awesome by the way.
Rating: Summary: He did Great! Review: My grandfather and Robert Spence did a great job. You know I was a little reluctant to read it, but I finally got down to it and was amazed. I never knew that much about Anse and Cap or any of the others.. It was excellent! and I'm not just saying this because I'm his granddaughter either.
