Rating: Summary: Very touching story by the woman who experienced it Review: "Elvis and Me" is ony of my favorite books I'v ever read simply because he's my favorite singer and my favorite person of all time, and because it's a great one-in-a-million book. This touching and moving story is told neatly and accordingly by Priscilla who experienced her life as the King's love interest, and later becomes his wife, and become unfortunately separated but they've never lost contact with each other. There are a lot of things about Elvis I never knew before that are in here: His total disinterest in making "G.I. Blues" (I can't imagine why other than he just returned from the Army), and his addiction to prescription drugs staring before the end of his life. It was the Army that got him started on prescription pills. Not because he felt like it, people. Read this wonderful page-turner and see what you think. You'll find out a lot of information. One other thing, Elvis swears in this book several times, but don't let that stop you from loving him.
Rating: Summary: Representation of herself Review: I couldn't put the book down because of the way in which it was written. I knew that she cheated on Elvis, the details of which she skipped over. I am new to Elvis material, so I don't know much about him. I thought that her book might be helpful for a start. It was and it wasn't. It seems very dramatic and moving, a woman who desperately loves a man she ultimately cannot win away from his dead mother, fame, and child-like emotional stability. I would give this a five if I had never come across another source, but I have. Elvis is a mass market for biographies and video documentaries. I don't blame this woman. But my overall impression of the book, even after consideration of it, is this: If you like a good, turbulent romantic fantasy with a woman's abiding love winning out over all, read the book. If you want to learn about Elvis, this book may not hold its own.
I know nothing about Priscilla nor her enterprise. Therefore I take no personal stance for or against her. She may claim to love Elvis. That's her business. However, as a representation of Elvis, she should have compared her own memories with those of others. Sometimes people who did know someone will write a book simply to get their emotions out. She has some very conflicting ones represented. So, as a representation of Elvis, it isn't one. It is a representation of herself and her emotional state at the time rather than an accurate picture of Elvis. And when someone is speaking from emotion, then the story is definitely highly biased and distorted. But, if she says she loves Elvis, then how can we counter that?
Rating: Summary: typical glossed over celeb bio Review: I have had a change a heart about this book, if you read it when it first came out in the 80's, you thought it was a great book. But now over 15 years later alot of inconsistencies arise but since Priscilla is Priscilla no one has really ever dared to question her. Alot of people who were interviwed for Child Bride tell a diffrent story, so many that their stories can't be explained away because i have always believed were there is smoke, is fire. In regards to the fact that Priscilla did date quite alot but she says she hardly did and when Priscilla was supposedly giving Elvis encouragment in the TV movie. Another side came about to where she was mocking him, laughing behind his back over the snowmobile suit he was wearing. And on and on, don't buy this book because if you really read it, you will come away with alot more questions then answers. But if you like the usual spin, you will love this one..
Rating: Summary: One-Sided Story Review: I originally read Elvis and Me about 10 years ago and it left me with many questions concerning Priscilla's intentions. Was this book really intended to tell the whole raw honest truth of the king and his bride OR to gloss Priscilla's image and leave her with a whiter than white reputation ? I decided for myself that the second reason was probably the truth. I could not help but feel that Priscilla used this book to boost her image and to provoke pity onto herself. This , in my opinion, was a PR motivated move by Priscilla Presley. I could not help but feel that she still has some resentment inside her for the years that she spent in Elvis' shadow and this clearly comes across in the pages. She has stated in interviews that she needed to "tell the truth" for the sake of her daughter, however in reference to the so called "rape" section (at the end of their marriage), what effect would this have on your child..and to tell the whole world ??, I am sorry but I feel that nobodys best interests were at heart except Priscilla's. I felt that most of the "story" in this book was what Priscilla wanted you to believe and I did come away with many many questions and doubts. I have recently read Child Bride and these very questions and doubts that I had were unbelievably covered in this book. I really am sorry to say, that Child Bride, with its much researched evidence and reliable scources, seems to be the accurate version (in my opinion) of events and the truth, surrounding Elvis and Priscilla's relationship.
Rating: Summary: Good insightful story. Review: I originally saw the movie a few years ago and came across this book and had to get it. While it is not the "whole story" of their lives together, its a good look at it. The book is only just over 300 pages and that just cannot cover 14 years or whatever.
There are such mixed reviews and this book is compared to so many other stories that I have not read. But I still liked this book. No way does it tell everything, who would write a book that gave away all their memories and left nothing sacred for you to look back on?
One thing, after reading the reviews for this book I have to say that alot of people are sad. Elvis was with Pricillia for years. She was his only wife. Come on, there was no way he hated her or was pushed into anything. Give it up. Actions speak louder then words and all that. I do not think she bashed Elvis with this book. I think she told her story, and maybe she did embelish it a little. Who is to say? Who else was there but them to know what happened? She showed that she loved him enough to live how he wanted her to. How she tried to be everything he wanted. It also shows how Elvis brought her into his life and how her transformation happened.
Pricilla's writing is easy to follow and identify with. Obisouly it is going to be a one sided story, as Elvis is dead. Common sence, why would a superstar be with and marry a woman who he supposedly did not want to be with when he could have had anybody? Why did he not marry Ann Margret if she was his great love? Why did he keep going back to Pricilla if what he really wanted to do was let her go? Be real and let go of jealously.
I think that this shows a side of Elvis that no one would have known about if Pricilla did not share it. I fell in love with that side of him. Even if he was a little weird. Which he was.
I think that this is a good story and gives you a peak into Elvis's life from a point of view that no one else has. It is a good book and makes you want everything to work out. Only you know that it wont. I think that Pricilla was a lucky woman who had one hell of a life with Elvis. A life that many others wished for themselves.
Rating: Summary: So first of all best book Review: Ok so this is such an interseting book for any true elvis fan.I can not believe how gay some of you people are.I think its cool how this bookgoes into as you people call 'a darker side' even thought its not, because shes letting his fans know another side of him,and you get to know more about elvis.Priscilla loved him with all her heart, anbd she isnot negative at all towards him.Maybe you people are just used to'are ytou lonseome tonight' well as far as im concerned that book is complete and total fiction. She doesnbt sayd anything bad about elvis, because its her fantasyu and she tries to make it like everything went well for them, excpet thqt they coulkdnt be together.First of all EVERY relationship hasd problmes. There is not certain thing as a problem free relationship, that author needs a fducking reality check,.Priscilla knows what really went on seeing as she was his wife, and with him for numeral amounts of yeatrs so stop being homos.
Rating: Summary: Presenting The Priscilla Myth Review: Simplistic in its writing style, Priscilla tells about her life and her relationship with The King. The truth is heavily embellished and "Priscilla-tized", making for a great romance novel but not for an accurate account of how she met Elvis and their relationship. If you do read this book, you ABSOLUTELY MUST read "Child Bride" by Suzanne Finstad along with it, and judge for yourself if Miss Priscilla is being completely honest with herself and with her readers. I could not help but feel a strong underlying resentment and jealousy towards Elvis that seeps through her narration. Priscilla's book has many interesting revelations and anecdotes, but after you read "Child Bride", it's more intriguing to see what Priscilla didn't include in her autobiography than what she did.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: This is a great work of fiction. How can we deny or comply with the words written? It's for Priscilla Presley alone to know if the truth was written or not. But, once you start the book, it's very hard to put down. The material immediately grabs you and hangs on for the remainder of the story. If you are looking for a book that hints at a biography, includes history, shines as a love story, and reads like a best selling fictional book, then this book is for you.
Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: GOOD READ, BUT NOT ENTIRELY TRUTHFUL Review: While this book is good in the way that it gives a more intimate account of Elvis, I think Priscilla tried to go out of her way to make it sound like a Disney book instead of a true account of her life with Elvis.
Many people wonder why her parents let her move in with Elvis at such a young age, always siting money, but I think the reasons are not entirely financial. Priscilla moved in with Elvis in early 1963 when she was 17 nearly 18 (not 16 like she portrays in the book). She turned 18 in May of 1963 and by law, anyone is considered an adult when they turn 18 and she could have moved in with him then whether her parents liked it or not. Her parents probably figured it was worth keeping the peace to let her go a couple months early.
Another irritating part of the story is how Priscilla insists that Elvis' proposal of marriage "was his decision and his alone." This simply isn't true. Elvis has no desire to get married and would have strung her along for another 20 years if he could. It was only Capt. Beaulieu's threat of going public with Elvis' relationship with an underaged girl that prompted him to get married.
I believe that Priscilla was indeed a virgin up until her wedding day, simply because Elvis has such bizarre ideas of sex. One of his bodyguards wrote in his book that Elvis did confide to him that while he and Priscilla "fooled around", they did not engage in intercourse.
And Priscilla certainly glossed over her extra-marital affairs, that's for sure. While it's completely understandable why she would have sought out someone after Elvis basicially abandoned her in pursuit of his bachelor life-style, she should have been honest about it. Her affair with Mike Stone had been going on for 2 years before she actually left Elvis; so why didn't she say so? She insinuated that it only happened shortly before she left Elvis.
Be that as it may, this is still a good book to read. I respect Priscilla for being a far better business woman than what Elvis every was. While a great entertainer, he was self-centered, violent, emotionally immature, mentally unstable and just plain weird.........no wonder she left him.
Rating: Summary: Elvis gets chewed up and spit out! Review: Who among us would want to have our image and empire run by our cheating ex spouse? Elvis was no saint, and I don't blame Priscilla for getting out or straying when he wouldn't make love to her. The reasons why he shut her out is what she leaves out of the book. CHILD BRIDE tells a far more accurate version of how Elvis' little experiment with her backfired and he was forced into marriage by Priscilla's step father, who threatened to go public with the nature of their relationship if he didn't seal the deal with the marriage he promised. Elvis was still going to back out until the Colonel put his foot down and made Elvis get on one knee. Some guy that step father is; who would let their 15 year old daughter move in with a movie star? It's like those parents that send their kids to Neverland Ranch hoping for a big pay day. The Bealieu family's exploitation of Elvis has been a sin that continues, and she has seemingly passed her hard feelings along to Lisa Marie.
