Rating: Summary: Finally! Reality and truth about our job... Review: After five years in EMS, I thought I'd never find a book that told the truth about what we do. Peter Canning uses his talents as a writer, and brings to light the worst and best parts of being a paramedic. He comes from white collar America. A politician's speech writer who has to find a new home when his guy loses. He finds EMS and once its in his blood there is no turning back. Canning takes the reader on a journey through his first year as a paramedic. Its his real life from the field experience that makes his book so captivating. The reader can see the excitment of his first major call, and feel the frustration of his disappointments. To become a paramedic is hard, but to stay one is even harder. No one who has not been out there will understand it. Canning allows every reader into the reality of the streets. This book should be required reading for every ER doctor and nurse, and for anyone who is family or a friend of a medic.
Rating: Summary: Get the real understanding of a Paramedic Review: I am currently a M.I.C.T (Mobile Intensive Care Technician-Paramedic). This book not only gave an excellent presentation of the position from a professional position with excellent description of treatment and protocol, but also caters to the layman who may not have any medical treatment. They book will not only show a true paramedic, but also give a Paramedic the credit where credit be due. Some think that being a Paramedic is all glory,...you will find out the true life of a Paramedic in this book....which is Glory for a mere second and waiting forever for a call, and transporting patients that did not have a ride to a doctors appointment.
Rating: Summary: Get the real understanding of a Paramedic Review: If you want an idea what it is really like to be a medic on the streets, this is it--good, bad and ugly. I read it when I was starting EMT school, and nothing prepared me better for what I would see in the field. Definately a must read for anyone in the medical field, or anyone who wants to go into emergency medicine.
Rating: Summary: Medic's opinion Review: It was okay. I have run EMS for 18 years and I feel he does a pretty good job with details.
Rating: Summary: A must read for any prehospital worker Review: Just incredible!!!!!! I read this book while taking an EMT Basic course. The stories often brought a tear to my eye, either from laughing so hard or by feeling the pain associated with loss. I am truly convinced, after reading this, that I made the proper career choice. I am looking forward to another great installment from a truly gifted writer.
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Paramedic is an outstanding novel that keeps you turning pages. Pater Canning succesfully brings the world of a paramedic to you taking you to emergency sites that are horrible to ones that make you laugh out loud. It's definatly worth reading and will completly altar the way you view the EMS system while he candidly explains the stress of failers and the joy of saves in an ambulance.
Rating: Summary: Amazing! Review: Rescue 471 is the most insiteful book I have ever read! Peter Canning paints a vivid picture of the word of EMS today. His stories relate to the true feelings of hope and dispair we all feel day to day in this profession. I recommend this book to any one in EMS!!
Rating: Summary: Any closer to the action and you'll be doing the IV's. Review: This is the most true to life book I've ever read about Emergency Medical Services. Peter Canning writes about every aspect of EMS. From his partners to his best and worst calls, to the stress on and off the job to the low pay, to the dangers faced by paramedics and EMTs everyday. I received this book when I was 15. It inspired and interested me so much, I started volunteering with my county ambulance service, and now, at 18, I'm a certified EMT for the State of Florida. Mr. Canning has written this book so that everything is explained. I would give it a 10 if I could.
