Summary: Shakespeare's pupil in context of late 17th century England
Review: "John Dryden and His World" is an excellent biography on one of Britain's most dominating poet laureates, and also a good background history of his times in the late 17th century (1660-1700). It was the time of the Restoration of the constitutional monarchy (1660) and of renewed battles between the Church of England and dissenters and catholics. There were new discoveries in science and technology, in addition to the enormity of the exploration and colonization of the new world. Dryden spoke to the people living in this modernizing, complex english society. He had to keep on his toes, adapt his innovative genius for writing poetry, plays, essays, criticism and translations to the times. How he did this is one of the points of Winn's biography, in addition to being a thoughtful dissection of the literary works of Dryden. Winn has a bit of a historian's approach, although he is Professor of Humanities. Because he does provide historical background, the book is infinitely more interesting than the typical literary biography. In addition, Winn rightly portrays Dryden as the most dominant literary figure of the British Restoration age, and a legitimate historical figure. After all, Dryden almost single-handedly transformed the English Language for all the masses, and helped change the way we view literature. Yes, the reading may seem tough going at first. But this is the type of book that demands concentration. It slowly absorbs the reader, as Winn introduces us to the myriad of people and events that played a role in Dryden's important and brilliant literary career. Since Dryden is a key figure in the whole literary CANON debate, it is essential we get a better understanding of the man and his times. This IS the book to read for that. In addition, the book is amply illustrated, and contains a solid index, numerous informative appendices, superb footnotes (one of the fascinating highlights of this book) and an extensive bibliography. Yes, this book is not for everyone. But if you want to observe and see "God's plenty," as Dryden himself said of Chaucer, then try reading this FASCINATING, BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT BOOK. I heartily recommend "John Dryden and His World" to all.
