Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Essential reading for those interested in Yoruba artists
Review: Not only does this book contain critical information not found anywhere else but it is written in a style true to the artist himself and the Yoruba oral tradition. If you are a carver you will find valuable information that relates to the process traditionally trained Yoruba carvers use to do their work as well as technical information about wood and tools. It is also valuable for the scholar intersted in the social status of the artist in Yorubaland before Europeans and how this particular artis has come into his own since colonialism and independence. But most importantly it was written by the artist himslef and is true to his personality. This type of document is rarely written by a person of Lamidi Fakeye's experience and status in Yoruba carving. This book reflects on the past while being rooted in the present situation of a Nigerian artist today.
