Rating: 5 stars
Summary: oustanding, lively historical memoir
Review: In this lively, entertaining and searingly emotional memoir, Itabari Njeri explores growing up black and female. With honesty and insight, she explains how race impacted her childhood and her adult life. However, the chapters that most stood out for me were those that dealt with her personal life. I was especially affected by her jarringly emotional account of her abortion -- she tells of the experience in such raw, spare prose that it resonated with me.
