Summary: POSITIVE! POSITIVE ! ABSOLUTLY POSITIVE!
Review: excellent book! Well written and positive! I highly reccomend this book! Rita Piro captures the essence of the real Judy Garland! The awesome woman she was, her extrodinary talent is emphesized and her genuine character as a performer, and person. Never before has someone captured Judy Garland the way Rita Piro does. This book is easy to follow and contains some of the best pictures I've ever seen! I defintly give this book a thumbs up. All the content is suitable too! A great addition to the true Judy Garland Fan. You really get a sense of who she really was on and off the screen! Yes she truly was a genius!

Summary: Judy done right
Review: Excellent book. Provides a whole new look. I know several people who have read it and all have enjoyed both the text and the photos which are simply beautiful.
If you are a Judy fan or a fan of old Hollywood, you will greatly enjoy.
Author gives new insight and factual info on Judy's life.

Summary: My View
Review: I gave this book five stars because it is a very enjoyable book. The text is flowing, unobtrusive, no hidden agendas, no theories about anything or anyone. The photos make it a "can't put it down until the end" type of experience.

As a longtime Garland aficionado, I do know, however, that there will be people who just cnannot or will not accept the fact that Judy did experience many positive moments in her life. That is to what this author dedicates her book. She tells you in the intro and preface that there have been countless books and such written about the tragic Judy, the neurotic, psychotic Judy an dthat this book seeks to present the facts about the other side to Judy.

She provides an indepth study of Judy's family history like no other biographer, right down to a family tree, documents and letters supplied by Judy's relatives.

She richly describes many of the Gumm family experiences, tackles most if not all of the rumors concerning Judy's family and chidlhood and presents many facts and new info.

SHe takes on all of Judy's life in and out of the MGM studios, she provided one example after another of Judy Garland's generosity, affection, warmth, humor, love, diligence and more. Her work for the US Governement is given a full study, alternative quotes are given, sensitive attention is given to her troubles.

The problem for some (but not for me) is that many Garland fans just don't want to hear that. But you can't fault the author because she tells you that you're not going to hear a rehash of the well-known Judy Garland story. If you want that, there are many, many other resources taht will give it to you.

But this is one of the FEW, very FEW, that will give you the other side. Judy Garland has always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to people talking about her. As the author writes, there was so much that was good about her, but that gets lost in all the speculation, rumors, gossip, innuendo, etc.

The writing is very easy to read, there are no theories and counter-theories, no similes, qualifiers, speculation etc. It's really just the facts. There is also a lot of logic.

All in all, if you like Judy, you must read this book and the photographs cannot be found elsewhere. Get it.

Summary: Nice job
Review: I thought that this was a really nice job. Author presents new and different info from new sources. A professional, classy, pleasant treatment of a celeb, I thought. Makes you think twice about all the gossip you've heard over the years. Terrific photos.

Summary: Fabulous work
Review: This is not your ordinary Judy Garland book. I first read the author's second book, then got this one. I enjoyed both, but this one is great. Lots of fun information on Judy, new facts and things. Lots and lots of images. Very enjoyable to read. Author captures Judy Garland perfectly, I thought. Great insight into the times, too. If you like Judy or old movies or the golden years of film, get the book. You will not be disappointed.

Summary: Your choice
Review: You cannot deny that this author has done a great and original job with her subject and her intention. This is simply a new look at Judy, with many new and just incredible photos that all will enjoy. I say that the negative remarks are more illustrative of the reader's take on Judy than this author's. The author clearly makes it known that the book was never meant to be a comprehensive look at Judy's life, it only wanted to cover the years up to 1950. As for Judy's taped recordings of her comments about herself, they have been widely dismmised by Garland historians. I loved this book and know many others who have agreed. Basically it is a case of if you like the tragedy and gossip and scandal of Judy, then you will be disappointed in that you will not find it here. The author presents many, many facts that serve to discredit previous ideas about Judy - and backs them up, so you can't be mad at her for that.
