Summary: Rock 'n' roll for dummies and air-guitarists.
Review: For all of you out there, who once dreamed of breathing fire like Gene Simmons but are now jockeying a desk, this book is for you. Damn the cubicle. Quit your job and join a rock'n'roll band. Get rich. Get women. Get famous. Or not.

In the Cheese Chronicles, Tommy Womack presents a great look into the usually-unglamorous lifestyle of beer-swilling, chain-smoking, working musicians just trying to make ends meet. He demonstrates that the road to musical nirvana isn't paved with gold for every band that hasn't made it yet. It's paved with concrete just like the Pennsylvania Turnpike, complete with an ungodly amount of potholes. From songs about frozen fish to crashing out next to the litter box on some guy's floor, it's all here. And funny as hell to boot.

Too bad you can't get the Cheese on cd anymore. I'd buy a copy. Definitely.

Summary: CHEESE RULES!!!
Review: I read this book having never heard a note of Government Cheese's music so I can assure you that it being unfamiliar with the band will not affect your enjoyment of the novel. Womack is a witty and intelligent writer so most of "The Cheese Chronicles" is fast paced and entertaining. Best of all, it's also a convincingly accurate account of what it's like to be an unknown band tryign to get records made and distributed while constantly on the road. A must read for any music fan or anyone who was ever in, or wants to be in, a band.

Summary: You had to be there...
Review: I used to go see this rock and roll band you've never heard of when they played my Middle Tennessee college town. Although none of them would ever remember me, I've actually met and spoken with them on a couple of different occasions. So, reading this book was like getting in on all the shows I missed. For me, it was a funny bit of nostalgia. For those of you who've never heard of Government Cheese or heard their music...well, that's a real shame.

Summary: CHEESE RULES!!!
Review: I was one of the lucky ones who got to see Tommy Womack and Government Cheese perform maybe twenty times before they decided to call it quits. "Cheese Chronicles" documents the ups and downs of a very entertaining, high-energy group of musicians on the road for years. Cheese always reminded me of the early Who with their penchant for driving audiences mad, and it was great to relive some of my more fun times in the 1980s. Womack's book is funny, poignant and gives the reader a great idea what it's like to be in a working rock band. Tommy's prose is intelligent, easy to read, and one never had to see the band perform live to enjoy the book or to get a good idea what the rock life or Government Cheese are all about.

Summary: Amazing Cheese
Review: This is the story representing the 1,000 bands who didn't make it for every one that did -- and I'd MUCH rather read about Government Cheese's failures than N'Sync's successes.

Tommy is a fabulous musician, a clever writer and funny as hell. I grew up near where he did and have never read a more accurate expression of wanting to be a rocker soooo badly in a place that has NO desire to be rocked, thank you very much. Tommy has never grown out of the pure fun of jumping on your bed playing your tennis racket to "Surrender" or air-drumming Peter Criss' "God of Thunder" solo on Alive II. (Try it, I don't care if you're a 42-year-old accountant with a minivan. It will keep you young.)

I once chased Tommy across a bar to praise his book with beer-induced enthusiasm. The next day I sent a letter apologizing and received a reply that still hangs on my wall: "I'll accept no apologies for drunken behavior. I heartily endorse it."

You could read this book 50 times and never tire of it.

Summary: Amazing Cheese
Review: Tommy Womack is a great writer! I too was a Cheesefan back in the day, but this book would be amazing even if I hadn't heard of them. I laughed, I cried...I could not put it down! Facinating and definitely a must read for any young bands out there.

Summary: An essential read for anyone and everyone!
Review: Tommy Womack's excellent book, Cheese Chronicles, is an essential read for anyone interested in the music business. The book is hilarious and at the same time, it provides a gritty look at what it's really like to be in a rock band. I cannot say enough good things about this book. BUY IT AND READ IT!
