Rating: Summary: A surprisingly informative book in narrative for children Review: I am a descendant of one of the women in this book (Penelope Stout). The book is apparently supposed to be a children book, but I found it remarkably informative and interesting. The author takes the stories of four women and brings them together with some historical background to present a fun to read narrative. Along the way are many unobtrusive but (to me) immensely interesting side notes (including origins of place names and historical tidbits).

Rating: Summary: Four Women in a Violent Time Review: This is a very informative and riveting book. About 10 years ago I was given a copy of exerpts from this book because I am a decendant of Penelope Stout one of the Four women. As a newlywed Penelope embarked on the journey to America. Upon arrival, she found herself slashed across her middle so her intestines were hanging out, her shoulder hacked up, and she had been scalped by Indians. Imagine her horror after surviving for a week alone in a hollowed out tree to see two Indians coming. Obviously she survived, but you'll have to read the rest yourself to see how she was able to live to be 110 years old and bear 10 children.(this is my quick version this is not an exerpt, as you can see I am certainly not a writer) I had heard her fascinating story as a child, and reading those exerpts just wasn't enough for me. I set immediately to find the book for myself. After several years I was able to obtain a copy. I am now thrilled with the opportunity to buy more copies to pass along to my children so this part of our family's history can be preserved.
