Rating: Summary: Gives a view of an era of rapid change in society Review: This book details the life of a young black man starting in a small town in Central Pennsylvania the 1930s and continues with his college and military days and documents his tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers. While baseball is important to the author's life, family and friends are key also. What is most interesting is the racial discrimination of the era, and the efforts of others to combat it. Though not a "literary" text, the book provides wonderful insight in everyday language into a world not all that far removed from us, but one the younger generation may not know about.
