Summary: Lord Baltimore and the English exploration of Newfoundland..
Review: Any young student who picks up this Colonial Leaders volume about "Lord Baltimore: English Politician and Colonist" by Loree Lough is going to assume that this is the guy for whom the city of Baltimore was named. This is certainly true. But I bet they will be surprised to learn that Lord Baltimore never even visited Maryland. A few months after George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, died in 1632 the Maryland Charter was granted and it was his sons who led the first expedition to "Maria's Land." In fact, Lord Baltimore helped found the colony of Avalon in Newfoundland and ended up in Virginia after publicly declaring himself a Catholic and resigning his office as secretary of state. George Calvert was, indeed, both a politician and a colonist, which is a most interesting combination. In fact, his political career is much more interesting than his life as a colonist. "Lord Baltimore" is illustrated with both historic paintings and etchings, as well as contemporary color photographs. Other volumes in this series look at other famous colonists including Peter Stuyvesant, Miles Standish, John Smith and William Penn. These books provide much more information to students, and teachers for that matter, than they will find in their American history textbooks.
