This review is not intended to discount the tragedies of the author's life. I find the book hard to take seriouly by the mere fact that he says the word "I" a little too much. Not even Jesus was this self-referential. This book parodies itself fairly quickly, making you ask "Are you hitting on me?". Kanaan tries too hard in rehashing some old hippy truisms that he neither refreshes nor truly expands upon. In the end, Kanaan reminds me of those oh so sensitive "peots" who are trying to get laid for the night.

Review: I'm not very good at writing these kinds of things, in fact this is my first book review. I've never been prompted to write about something like I have about Literati. I have chosen the words that I feel best describe my experience with Literati they are as follows: Imaginative. Clever. Witty. Genius. Passionate. Intriguing. Deep. Challenging. Inspiring. Great. But don't take my words for it, see for yourself.

Summary: I was offended, then I was entranced, then I understood.
Review: Listen folks, when I first started reading this book I have to be honest, I was offended. I thought this author to be arrogant, self-centered, and just plain egotistical. But as I really gave the book the time and attention it deserved I found him to be a compassionate, intense, and inspiring writer. The here are surface things that get you to thinking, and it really strikes a cord in you, but the underlying meaning of the book is truly engaging and reader oriented. By the time I had finished the book I found myself crying, laughing, and saying "Yes!" out loud. It truly was an inspiration. I even called the author (since his number is in the book introduction) and actually answered the phone! We had a very interesting conversation about Literati, and even about myself. Kanaan is a real person, and in a sea of unreal authors it is nice to know that there is still someone out there who wants to change the world for the better, and who is willing to be available to this audience. Thanks Kanaan. Keep up the good work.

Review: Literati is delicious!!! ...Tasting like a beautiful tragedy encompassed with triumph and life lessons. This book is both inspirational, mesmerizing and life changing. It's truly amazing one can turn such horrible and tragic occurences in life to something of beauty and enlightenment. Literati not only drips with imagination but also provokes thought and inspires the soul to taste life's challenges.

Summary: It was like a movie for the mind.
Review: Once or twice in a lifetime you read something that really has a profound effect on you... Literati is such a book. It is written in such a way as to draw the reader into the world being written. Kanaan provides his home phone number, and his personal e-mail address on the first page of the book and challenges his readers to contact him, to discuss the ideas and thoughts expressed and embodied by Literati. That is a bold move! How refreshing to read something so personal, so real, and so genuine. I felt completely engaged by the style of writing, and the ideas though not all in line with my own, are well articulated and created with such passion that they become wonderfully infectious. If I had to recommend any of the books that I have read in my life, this one would be among the top five. If you're looking for something different, something that challenges you, or something to make you feel beyond yourself, then this book is for you. If you are easily offended, or unable to be exposed to new ideas and new ways of thinking, then this book is not for you... either way, it's sure to make you think!

Summary: Unlike anything I've ever read before or since.
Review: When I first read this book I was taken back by this thing he calls "Purposeful Imperfection." It's a writing style which disregards the rules of modern grammar. Wow, making mistakes that matter. I like that. I also like the free flowing way in which the book seems to come together. It is intelligent, deep, mystic, friendly, and above all meaningful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a change from the norm.
