Summary: This book is well written and useful
Review: Integrate Microsoft Project with Microsoft Project Server 2002 is not an easy task. This book takes you through step by step on how to install and configure Project Server 2002. Each step is illustrated with actual screen shot.

What I like the most about this book is that it goes beyond Microsoft Project Server 2002 installation and configuration. The book has detailed database structure information that not available anywhere else. The SharePoint Team Services section is also very useful. The last chapter of the book covers how to create professional customized reports and charts from Project Server data.

If you've ever searched for a good Microsoft Project Server reference book, this is the one.

Summary: Good Intro book
Review: It is obvious this is a good introduction book for Project Server 2002. The book provides step-by-step guide through the installation process for Project Server and SharePoint Team Services. It covers all basic functionalities in Project Server. Not much information on customization and problem solving.

Summary: Virtually Worthless Investment
Review: No stars here - but that wasn't an option when posting this review. Don't waste your time, or money, on this book. After trying unsuccessfully to install MS Project Server 2002 in a variety of ways, having collected reams of notes from many sources and sites, I was looking for a book that would guide me through this process and account for at least some of the varients in installation schemes. What I found in this book were verbatim extracts of precisely the things I had already downloaded. No additional instructions, no insights into different installation options, ... worthless! Unfortunately, this seems to be a problem with MS Project Server - there is little collected information, certainly nothing succinct, for either installation or administration of this product. At the time, this was the only book available that specifically addressed the Server portion of MS Project. Too bad it falls woefully short.

Summary: If I had only read the reviews...
Review: OK, so I should have looked further. This book is terrible. Most of the text can be found in the Microsoft documentation, which is disorganized and incomplte. All this book did was to put the documentation in order. If you really need some help, try Gary Chefetz' book.

Summary: A good handbook for Project Server 2002
Review: Practical help for building and administering Project Server 2002. This is a handbook you need to install, configure, and customize Project Server 2002. The strengths of this book are:

--Step by step installation process
--Complete coverage of database structure
--Customization insights and code samples

The weaknesses of this book are:

--Not enough troubleshooting
--Not enough advance features

Summary: Weak on installation but will make a great reference
Review: The 1st third of this book is basically just the Project Server ReadMe file. I'm left wondering in the author wrote the ReadMe or was simply inspired by it ļ

The rest of the book contains some useful information on how Project Server functions under-the-hood, including some very useful VBA scripting examples and an excellent overview of the Project Server SQL database structure. The database overview comes complete with the naming conventions employed to develop the database, data types for important table fields, a short description of the purpose of the field, and Visio-style relational table diagrams of the database structure.

VBA and database development definitely seem to be Qimao Zhang's forte. Although weak in the setup and installation section, this book will make an excellent reference once Project Server is installed and end users begin pushing for customizations and tweaks.

Summary: Objective
Review: This book has pointed out several important issues worth reading:

1. SharePoint Team Services is not an enterprise documentation system. The scalability of SharePoint is not so good for large project teams. The book suggested several other alternatives if you are looking for a full-blown enterprise documentation library.

2. You can integrate Project Server with other systems such as accounting, HR, or payroll systems. The key is to understand the database structure thoroughly before the integration. The book has pretty good coverage for database structure.

From our experience, installing SharePoint was a problematic process. Unfortunately, there is not much trouble shooting coverage in the book.

Summary: Project .....
Review: This book is just cut and paste from Microsoft whitepapers and it is my understanding that Microsoft is suing him for infringement. You would be better off with Tim Pyron's book.

Summary: Where is the most important chapter?
Review: This books contains 100 pages "how to install"
and 200 pages "database structure description" with sql code.

Unfortunately it does _not_ contain a 200 pages "how to use it" chapter.

Once you have installed the system and you do not want to develop to it a new application, just to use it, you do not need this book.
