Summary: Great Overview
Review: Eric Verzuh offers a great overview to the science of project management. He discusses all the main facets of project management with out getting to in-depth. This allows a reader to understand the baseline process of managing projects and at the same time learning the terminology. I give this book a 4 out 5 because some parts of the book were a bit unclear and needed a little more detail. An example of this was the indepth review of the project management office versus the skimming of risk and how to determine risk.

If you are new to the profession or have been thrusted into the position, def. purchase this book.

Summary: Disponível em Português no Brasil
Review: Este livro foi publicado no Brasil pela Editora Campus com o seguinte título: "MBA Compacto - Gestão de Projetos".

Summary: Gives theoretical knowledge only
Review: I ordered two project management books - this one by Verzuh and one called "Fundamentals of Project Management: Developing Core Competencies to Help Outperform the Competition" 2nd edition by James Lewis.

This one by Verzuh described core project managment procedures but lacked many real-world examples of these procedures in action, other than cursory remarks about how some process helped some company.

The book by Lewis was much more practical and seemed to be written from a person who had actually done lots of PM work rather than learned the theory and then wrote a book on it.

Summary: Very good blend of academic and pragmatic
Review: I read this book as a refresher in my effort to prepare for obtaining the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). I found this book to be both very thorough in addressing all areas of project management, and very practical and realistic in applying the principles and techniques of project management to real life situations and issues. It addresses all the process areas of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) by applying them to the various phases of projects. The author also properly addresses the needs of project administration by focusing on project management attention, not assuming computer/software tools will automatically give you the right answers.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their grasp of project management concepts and the application of them. It is also a quick and easy read, with good graphic elements in the book.

Summary: Comprehensive, practical, well-written
Review: I was recently introduced to the concept of project management [a total nivice], then my husband brought home this book so that i could discover what it was all about. Far from being a mere introdutory book, i found it to be a comprehensive step by step guide to project management explaing the concepts with easy application. It is also well-written in a logical order to ensure that you understand the hows and whys of everything. BUY IT !!!

Summary: The first Project Management book that makes sense.
Review: I've purchased a number of books on Project Management. They run the gamut from dry, cryptic self-congratulatory works of academic vanity to the disorganized and insultingly simplistic (including anything with the word "idiot's" in the title).

This is the first book I've read that I would consider appropriate for both seasoned PM's and those new to the discipline.

The format is great. For someone new to Project Management it has a logical, step by step flow backed up with relevant visuals and great case studies. For the more seasoned PM it is a treasure trove of problem-solving techniques, examples and formulas. It's not a book you'll be willing to loan to your friends (my copy looks to become one of the more "dog-eared" in my collection).

I run a small company but many of my clients are quite large (the companies, not the... nevermind). The concepts in "The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management" are adaptable to any size business and any size project; the case studies range from the development of the Boeing 767-400 to how Seattle's Safeco Field keeps their grass green. If the rest of "The Fast Forward MBA" series are as strong and results-oriented as this book, I may end up getting the collection.

Summary: Verzuh's written the book on getting your ducks lined up.
Review: If you're attempting to get a clear understanding of project management techniques in a hurry, then look no further. If you've been at this project stuff for years and just need a refresher on the latest language and ideas, then get this book. It's well thought out, well set out, clearly explained and brilliantly presents real-life examples to support the project process. You truly get the sense that the author has been out there in the firing line. Previously I've found project management books make an excellent cure for insomnia, but this one keeps those Grey cells buzzing. And once you've read it, keep it with you for reference. Since getting the book, you can bet I don't travel on a consulting assignment without this little guy stashed somewhere in my carry-on bags.

Summary: Even if you're MBA-phobic . . .
Review: My background is in law, and I have avoided business-oriented reading for many years. But I was recently promoted to a VP position that involves a lot of project management and didn't know where else to turn.

ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THIS BOOK IS A GOD-SEND. Well-written, concise, easy to follow, with excellent practical examples. I've learned (and successfully applied) something from every paragraph!

Summary: Gives theoretical knowledge only
Review: This is a great book to use for a basis to understand Project Management. It's kind of lacking in the foundation principles, but otherwise it's good. It leads you through the Project Management process (but doesn't give you the background on why things are done a certain way) in a way that's easy for anyone to understand. Good book for Senior Management folks.

Summary: A ?Must Own? Volume for the Project Manager?s Library
Review: This practical guide gives concise descriptions of the key concepts, skills and applications required to successfully navigate complex project management problems.

For theory questions and broad overviews, I usually consult Visualizing Project Management. For quick answers to troubling questions, I reach for this book.

The author lays out the concepts of project management in a structured, well-thought through pattern. Concepts build as you progress through the chapters. I particularly like the way the book dovetails with project management software. It correctly starts with project management theory the way it should be covered: work breakdown structures, risk management, earned value and communication. Only then is the theory applied to a software application. This approach recognizes that Project Management is both a science and an art form; at computer/software tools never supply magical answers.

The book's cover promises "Tough ideas made easy." This concise, well-written volume delivers.
