Rating: Summary: Find a copy of this book!!! A must read !! Review: How I wish I had read this book at 22 instead of 42. If you've never worked in management for a corp. It's hard to believe how corrupt and seemingly crazy companies can be. My experience says Don has been there. His analysis and advice are dead on. Follow his advice, all of it, or attend the school of hard knocks. I'm loaning a copy of this book to all the working women I care about. I'll only loan it to my friends who aren't competing against me. (Get this book back in print!) 90% applies to men as well as women. My favorite quote. "If everyone played by the rules, only exremely talented boy scouts would rise to the top." So true.
Rating: Summary: Office wisdom Review: How many books tell the (and sometimes disgusting) truth about how the world really works? Well, at least one does, Office Politics by R Don Steele. Expect no encouraging words or quick fixes, but a lot of work and thinking on YOUR side. Steele guides you in the process of becoming successful at the corporation (and even at life, too) through his well organized and entertaining book. His style is direct and harsh, and besides it's directed to women it works for men too (at least a 90%). The book is about americans corporations, so readers from other cultures might find that some parts doesn't apply to their own situation (even in case of working for american companies located outside US), but anyway, a large part still holds. As a plus, you can call the author regarding these matters to his own web radio show at live 365.
Rating: Summary: A Woman's Battle Kit...The Secret Weapon Review: I came to this book by chance, having read another by the author, and was impressed. As a father of two daughters I'll ensure they get this book and understand its philosophy to survive in any corporation or small business. This is a how-to manual, anchored on a sound, practical and inventive approach to more than survival for women in any office situation. Survive, thrive and prosper is the message - and the power comes with that. Not a sensitive and delusional New Age guide, this is a book that attacks the issues bluntly, examines them and offers practical and creative solutions for men, as well as women. Simple, direct and unshakeable solutions that work. If you are a woman, pack it with your cosmetics. If you are a man buy it anyway and share the information with your women friends. Everyone wins. Possibly the best, down-to-earth, clever and pragmatic guide to an age-old problem (and a thousand ways on how to overcome it) that I've read.
Rating: Summary: You MUST have this if you work in an office. Review: If I had this book when I was starting out, it would have saved me a huge amount of difficulty in advancing my career. While this book is written for women, the vast majority of the material applies to men as well. Why go through the school of hard knocks when you don't have to? That's what Steele does for you with this book. Like all of Steele's books, it will open your eyes to the way the world really works and your life will never be the same.
Rating: Summary: School of Hard Knocks in one volume Review: If you are trying to get your first job in the business world and you don't want to go through corporate culture shock (because what you've been taught has no relation to reality) then this book is a must read. I never liked the idea of working for a corporation and consequently never worked for one. However, this book applied in a lot of ways to a teaching job I had, mainly because of the author's insights into the male mindset. A lot people would like to think that most men don't think like this - I would counter that SOME men don't, but most do. And don't believe for a minute that many, if any of your co-workers are your allies. Most of mine were so insecure and pathetic that they would have sold me (any anyone else) down the river for a promotion or a bigger salary. And I'm talking about people with college degrees, not high school dropouts. I was not the least bit surprised at the Enron debacle - a lot of corporate mischief has been going on for quite some time - Robert Maxwell running off with billions in worker pensions and the Sunbeam CEO doing the same - most people who have average IQ's don't catch on until something on the scale of Enron does occur. And thank god it did - what a wake up call it was. The main advice from this book is 1) Get in - 2) fight by choosing your battles wisely - 3) get your "F.U." money and 4) retire early, without becoming a slave to "General Cow". Good advice.
Rating: Summary: Excellent "action guide" to corporate politics -for Men too! Review: If you're familiar with R. Don Steele you know his writing style. If not, prepare yourself for Don's refreshingly honest view of corporate politics, with a slant towards helping the young professional woman navigate and avoid the pitfalls of corporate politics.
That being said, this book is much more than just "office politics for women". About 95% of it is equally usable by men too--young, old, whatever. I have read many business [politics] books, and this one is definitely in the top 10. I have fought and continue to fight in the corporate trenches, and R. Don is "spot on" with his observations. It's a male-dominated working world and to pretend it's not is naieve and foolish.
If you're familiar with Robert Townsend's "Up the Organization", this book has a similar feel to it. It's honest but not uptight. R. Don adds humour in places, and just good old-fashioned common-sense.
Currently this book is out of print but if you can't find a used one it's WELL WORTH IT to add it to your bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: School of Hard Knocks in one volume Review: This book is what every caring Father should read and then give to a daughter they want to see succeed in business and life. A must read for young ambitious women.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book, although written originally for women, is just as helpful for me. As a 24y/o in Corporate America, it's helped me understand who truly motivates executives - hint, it's not the creation of gobs of wealth. Wanna know more? Pick up the book!
Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: AWFUL - A book encourages cheating instead winning with wit Review: This is easily the best, most eye-opening book I have ever read on the subject of office politics. Full of excellent advice, believeable real world examples and insights. Don't be fooled by the stark cover. The advice is exactly on-point. Don Steele puts it out there in simple, sometimes brash, but very down-to-earth you-gotta-be-stupid-not-to-get-it terms. It's a must read for any neophyte in the workplace. Not just women!
