Review: Get Hired helped me get the job I've been in for 2 months now. After reading the first few chapters I revised what I'd thought was a pretty good resume to instead convey what it is I do that's truly outstanding. I learned how to send v-letters instead of cover letters -- this last approach got me four interviews from the first eleven resumes I sent out in response to newspaper classifieds. (Oh yeah, I got an interview via a monster.com posting. How often does that happen?)

There's lots of good stuff here, including the value of cold-calling on the phone, which I hated doing at first but which I discovered works. If you're looking for a book that gets you to re-examine your whole life and career you might do better with Parachute or Po Bronson. But if you're looking for a guide to getting hired quickly, well, it took seven weeks from the time I picked up this book for me to find the position I'm in, which is a job I like as much as any I've had. And I'd been looking for a job for more time than I want to admit -- even under an alias. Get this book, do what it says -- ESPECIALLY DO THOSE TASKS YOU DON'T REALLY "LIKE" DOING -- and keep positive. Things do change. Do not give up. Do not give up. I'm serious now, whoever wherever you are, staring at your little screen, I mean it, don't give up. Get yourself out there.

Review: I bought this book while looking for some help with my job search and found some pretty creative approaches to "the hunt" that no one else out there is doing. The V-Letter, brag book, and creative networking ideas were efficient and effective in helping me land many tough-to-get interviews and finally to accept an awesome highly competitive position with a fortune 20 company. I think that other books might help you find your work-related purpose in life and how to set goals to achieve that; however, this book really gives you the tools you need to turn it into reality. There are highly desirable jobs out there in very competitive industries with a lot of people unsuccessfully blasting their resume at or trying to schmooze a way in. I know because I'm one of those people that tried those and other crazy, ineffective head-banging methods. Certain techniques only get you so far. This book takes you above all those weak strategies and makes you look smart by giving you the outside-the-box ideas that recruiters and hiring managers look for. These ideas included the three mentioned above and the chapter on acing the interview.
