Summary: A bit dated - but still a good read
Review: Having just finished reading this book cover to cover, I thought I would share my thoughts... If you are looking to get started with your own small business, but don't even know where to start, this book will help a lot. Rather than most "motivational/howto" books where the first half of the book boasts about how great the book is, this book dives right in with a reality check of what you can expect in starting a small business, what will be expected of you, and how to begin. Much of the first part of the book has you closely analyzing yourself and your reasons for starting a small business - not to discourage you, but to perhaps bring you down from your eagerness enough to clearly see the challenges and pitfalls that will await you. There's plenty of solid advice in here that should pertain to most any small business just starting out.

I only gave it 4 stars because it needs revising now that we are in the "global" internet age - online businesses, marketing strategies, and resources are not covered. Also, under business types, LLC's/LLP's are not covered (most states did not recognize them until recently). Finally, the directory in the back is pretty useless at this point except as a source for ideas (pick up a magazine such as Entrepreneur for up to date ideas/opportunities).

On the whole for the price it is a good value, but be aware you will have to do further reading.. At a minimum you'll need a book on bookkeeping/accounting if you plan do your own bookkeeping, more information on taxing/licensing (unless you can afford to hire a tax advisor and attorney), and probably a detailed book pertaining to whatever type of business you decide to start.

Summary: Best Resource I've Found
Review: I am a successful "Mompreneur" and I owe just about everything I learned to turning my once idea into a full fledged successful business. This book literally tells absolutely everything you need to know from A-Z about what you need to do to get your business started and off the ground in addition to giving hundreds of ideas on businesses to start for under $1,000. I got more information from this book than I did from visiting my local SCORE chapter and from talking with other entrepeneurs. I can't recommend it enough for those that have a great business idea but aren't quite sure what the right steps are to take. Not to mention, the book tells you how to do it for under a $1,000.
