Review: I wanted a practical, principled guide to leadership. Unfortunately, this title falls short: it is overly academic, with numerous in-line citations and relatively themeless discussion of technical issues. If it discussed "the essence of leadership," I must have missed it. To the professional behavioral scientist, it might be useful, but to a general audience it is nearly worthless.

For a principled, well-written text descripting the personality traits of successful businessmen, I highly recommend Dr. Locke's other book ("The Prime Movers").

Review: This book does give some new information and a fresh perspective of looking at leadership traits. Overall, however, the book lacks integration with enough examples and reads poorly. I would strongly recommend "The Prime Movers" also by Locke instead of this book.
