Summary: Good for a small business owner.
Review: Good for a small business owner.

As a small bookstore owner in upstate New York, I am pleased to say we have sold over 300 copies of this book at the Arati Store. Customers buy one, then come back for more to give away.

The book's advice for empowering employees and patrons has been beneficial to me as a business owner, too. It actually transforms my relationships with people. For instance, one of the simple truths that the book offers is this, "People feel happiest when they feel they belong."

How many times have you felt unwelcome when you entered a place of business? How to make people feel respected and connected is one of many ways to empower people that Shar McBee offers in this deeply meaningful (yet easy to accomplish) format. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Good intentions maybe, but not many good or original ideas
Review: I am quite puzzled by the high ratings of this book, as I cannnot see much more than a collection of platitudes, with little effort to explain why the advice should work and why bother to apply it. All it offers is limited-context anectodes and short quotes from various religious figures. That is not very motivating; neither is the lack of a theme that helps remember the various pieces of advice. The stated, intended theme is "to lead is to serve", (not "to empower" as the title says) but even that does not hold this bag-of-tricks together. The true theme, as much as I can discern, is "be nice to people and they will be nice to you". In my experience that is not a rational worldview and ends up hurting both sides.

Just like most quick-fix advice books, this one does generate some temporary excitement to try out the practices. But as the advice is shallow and narrow, it quickly gets forgotten as useless in the complex reality of business leadership where more abstract, essential thinking is required.

This book makes the impression of an ego trip, with the author's photo on the cover and tiresome self-promoting stories throughout. It contributes few original ideas; I recommend Stephen Covey's and Ken Blanchard's works for in-depth, well-reasoned thought on effective leadership and interpersonal relationships.

Summary: To Lead Is To Empower
Review: I highly recommend this book to new and experienced leaders who want to make a difference in the workplace and enjoy the true value of being an exceptional leader.

When I apply the principles outlined in To Lead Is To Empower, my employee job satisfaction goes through the roof. Which means more profit dollars drop to the bottom line and shareholder value increases. The best part is, it does not cost (except for the price of the book) me any more time or extra money to enjoy these benefits. All I had to do is make the simple shift in my perspective from getting to giving. Then use the exercises in the book to stay on track and be successful.

Summary: A Leadership Book for Everyone
Review: If you want to be instructed in principles that will change your life, this is your leadership book. Everyday I get a new "ah hah" from applying these ideas. I am thrilled I opted to read this book. The author is one heck of a trainer and mentor.

Summary: Timeless Wisdom
Review: This book is a true guide about Leadership. It is uplifting and inspiring. The formula that is presented here is timeless, natural and easy to put into practice. It has helped me tremendously in my work and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Leading by Empowering
Review: To Lead is to Empower is an absolute must read not only for those beginning their careers in management, but also for those managers with decades of experience. The subtitle, "Leadership to Empower Your Employees & Yourself," gives but a hint of the practical information contained in the book.

No matter what your background, education or skill set, you'll learn so much from Shar McBee's book, even if you're not in a business field. The book will leave you motivated to take the simple, but profound, steps the author writes about all through the 13 chapters. The 224 pages will absolutely fly by, but the time you spend reading To Lead is to Empower will make a tremendous difference in your life, as well as in the lives of your employees.

Buy it. Read it. Use it as you lead, as you empower your employees and as you empower yourself.
