Rating: Summary: Don't like the physical abuse of child from parent reference Review: i am giving this one star as I don't like the passage, and worse, the illustration : "and some are very, very, bad. Why are they sad and glad and bad? I do not know. Go ask your dad." The scene is a big red fish (mother or father is not known) with a scared little fish, the adult fish hand it up toward the face of the little fish with little lines to show action as if the child fish is going to get slapped across the face. Another child fish is watching and smiling as if to say "ha, ha, you are getting in trouble now".I grew up with Dr. Suess. I also grew up with capital punishment, being hit by my parents as a common punishment method. Now that I am a parent I've decided to teach and instruct my children rather than just issuing punishment by the method of physically hitting them. Call me PC or whatever you want, it doesn't matter to me what you think of me. I am speaking from my heart. I realize this book was written in times when hitting children was seen as the norm in America as a normal punishment method. But times have changed. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics has a policy against hitting children as a form of punishment. I also don't like the old-fashioned labeling of a child as bad if they did one bad thing. The action they did was bad, but the child as a person is not bad. Any modern parenting book will explain that children should not be labeled as bad because it helps develop poor self-esteem. I like the rest of the book and decided to just rip out that page!
Rating: Summary: Rich in marvelous images Review: Dr. Seuss's extraordinary body of work is a collective treasure, but from that group of books a few stand out as his best. "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" certainly belongs in the category of Seuss's finest. Rich in clever rhymes and memorable images, this book scores a literary home run on nearly every page. Directed towards early readers, "One Fish" uses simple language in its funny rhymes. Seuss mixes his own created words together with standard vocabulary, resulting in such memorable lines as "just jump on the hump of the Wump of Gump." And these rhymes are accompanied by a rich variety of images that can only be described as "Seussian": A mother fish pushing her offspring in a baby carriage, a bed being commandeered by a menagerie of animals, and more. Futhermore, in "One Fish" Dr. Seuss introduces us to a wonderful assortment of Seussian creatures: the singing Ying, the hopping Yop, a truly bizarre creature known simply as "Clark," and many more. These images are sure to energize the imaginations of both children and adults. Seuss's images range from the joyful to the eerie, from the baroque to the earthy. I give "One Fish" my most enthusiastic recommendation.
Rating: Summary: One Two Blue Fish I am getting confused Review: Luckily and happily I will report that my daughter did not get confused. I did, but that's another story. She won't admit it, but I think this was her favorite Dr. Seuss book. It was the one I remember reading to her the most. I remember picking it up from the bookcase. The cover attracted me. I flipped through it and then purchased it. I read it to her every night for some time. Those were good days. I would have to say that these books made a difference in her ability to learn and want to read. Green Eggs and Ham also stands next to this book as I remember.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book ever written by anybody ever. Review: Allright ya little PUNKS. You go read your Tom Clancys and your sappy Danielle Steel romance novels and your "Bridges of Madison County"s and we can even go back time to your Mark Twains and your "Catcher In The Rye"s, you go read ALL of that. Then read THIS book, and YOU tell me which one is better. Because NONE of that can match the emotional intensity of reading to your kids at bedtime: "Once there was a little Nook. On his hat he had a hook. On his hook he had a book. On his book was "How to Cook". But a Nook can't read and a Nook can't cook, so what good to a Nook is a hook cook book?" AWESOME!
Rating: Summary: My Daughter's Favorite Book by Dr. Seuss Review: Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute. To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was her pick as the best of the books by Dr. Seuss. One of the appeals of this book is that it is relatively easy to learn to read, yet has much more variety than most other early readers. So your child will feel like she or he has accomplished a lot with reading this book, which is correct. The title gives the key to why this book works well as an early reader. One word is changed at a time, with a clear illustration next to it. Most children will read the illustrations like a rebus and later associate the words with the sounds of the name for the pictures. At some point, they begin reading from the words. Very nice! Here's another sequence: "black fish blue fish old fish new fish." Then, when he moves on, he uses simple rhymes: "This one has a little star. This one has a little car." Next, he progresses to substituting "some" for "fish" and adding a single verb to make a sentence as in "Some are read . . . . Some are old." So almost any child can soon begin to read along with few errors in the first 2 or 3 pages. Whenever the child can go no more, you can just keep going. With repetition, more of the book becomes memorized and the process continues. There is another reward for you and your child: The book also previews many of the wonderful characters and rhyming schemes that appear in other Dr. Seuss books. As a result, it will be easier to get started reading those books. You will feel like you are seeing an old friend again. You can also use each rhyme to take off on your own speculations. Our daughter used to love to come up with alternative rhymes that fit the pictures. Books like this one make it great fun to be either a parent or a child. In some cases, this book will be there for you in both roles over 20 to 40 years! Overcome your mistaken beliefs about how children can start to learn to read by seeing your child start naturally by associating the words with the pictures as you read this wonderful book to him or her!
Rating: Summary: A great book that doesn't drive parents nuts Review: The thing I like most about this book is it survives the perpetual-reading test, that is, neither my daughter nor I am tired of reading it after two years.
"One Fish..." is really composed of several "short" sections that can be read in any order, so for a toddler, it's perfectly fine to skip around. In fact, this is conducive to a toddler's randomness - one day it's "Hop hop hop, I am a Yop"; another day it's "From there to here."
Rating: Summary: this book is a must read child book Review: There was all diffent kind's of fish like young fish, old fish new fish, old fish and it was really relaxing to read for me .If you like fish this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: This is an awesome book! Review: I read this book when I was 2 and I got it out when I was 13 and I still loved it. Maybe even more. I think Dr. Seuss was a good role model and a very good poet. He has the funniest poems and stories ever. Thanx Doc. If you can read this from up above. From there to here. From here to there. Funny things are everywhere.
Rating: Summary: A Great Beginner Book Review: This book has a special place in my heart. This was the first book I read from cover to cover. It was a proud moment in my childhood. Like most Dr. Seuss books, you don't just read it, you experience it! the illustrations and the simple, yet brilliant text transport you to another world.
