Summary: Potty-darn good
Review: A really cute potty book. My 2 1/2 year old loves this book, and can recite it word for word. The story of Hannah's transition from diapers to underwear is told in rhyme, using the potty words "pee" and "poop".

This book helped to open a LOT of dialogue about using the potty, which is great. My daughter also likes to use the phrases from the book, "Whoops, I had an accident" and "that's OK". Unfortunately for me, we haven't moved from dialogue to action, (you'll notice she's not saying "Hurray I said, I did it!") but I guess there's a limit on how much to expect from one book!

The illustrations are cute. My daughter enjoys looking at the pictures and discussing what Hannah, her parents and her teddy bear are doing.

The quality of the book itself isn't quite as good. The pages are quite sturdy, somewhere between regular paper pages and board book pages, but the binding is already starting to split on our copy.

All in all, though, a fun book for a frustrating process.

Summary: Rhymes to remember...
Review: After searching through endless potty books, I chose this one. It does not show the anatomy too graphically, but gets the point across. My 2 yr old finds the rhymes of this book easy to remember, finishing the sentences as I read. I also like that when Hannah has an accident her parents supportively tell her, "That's okay, Hannah. Don't you give up yet!" Once she has a success on the potty, Hannah feels proud of herself and her parents encourage her to share the good news with her grandparents. We read this book while my daughter is on the potty which keeps her sitting for at least 5 minutes and keeps her focus on trying to "pee"" and "poop". Then, when my daughter has a success, I let her make her good news phone call to someone special in her life, too. This book is a great tool for positive-reinforcement potty training.

Summary: Wonderful, Helpful, Fun - She Loves It
Review: And I love it too. I knocked off 1 star for durability because of
the binding - but it still works.

It was a little long for her (22 month old) short-attention span at first but after a couple of tries she had no problems. I must read this book to her 2-3 times a day. She always brings it to me at bedtime. And always must have it when she's on the potty! She gets so into the story and anticipates the next line. She says "uh-oh" when there is an accident and nods and laughs when the parents say "that's ok" "don't you give up yet!" and of course claps when Hannah succeeds.

This book has cute pictures, rhymes, and covers just about all the potty basics in a fun and easy to understand way. What more could you and your little girl ask for?

And, btw, my big girl is using the potty more and more. I definitely think a lot is due to reading to her. (We also have "My Potty Book for Girls" and "The Princess and the Potty")

Summary: success
Review: Before my daughter got into the bathtub every morning, i put her on her little potty and read her this book. At times, we would read it twice -- she loved it! (i replaced Hannah's name with her own). After 2 weeks of patiently reading it and going thru our ritual, the light finally went on and she knew what needed to be done -- pee pee! promptly, we laughed and clapped, just as Hannah does in the book. we had a 20 minute celebration and she kept looking inside the potty proudly. i give full credit to this book for helping my daughter understand the potty concept more easily. yay!

Summary: success
Review: Hannah can eat her breakfast, brush her teeth, and even dress all by herself. Her biggest hurdle? The potty! As with most potty training experiences (mine included), Hannah and her parents need plenty of patience...and paper towels!

Reality check. I had two minor issues with the book: Hannah easily removes her diaper. My girls struggled to get theirs off (at least at first). And Hannah seems to graduate instantly from diapers to underwear after only one successful potty. In my house that meant instant mess!

Otherwise, readers will chuckle over Alyssa Capucilli's delightful rhyme, rapped by Hannah herself, and Dorothy Stott's hilarious antics of Hannah's potty partner Teddy the bear.

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think The Potty Book for Girls fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:

1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions such as "poop" and "pee."
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the hand washing step.

For other potty books that are instructional, check out What to Expect When You Use the Potty by Heidi Murkoff, You Can Go to the Potty by Martha Sears, or My Big Girl Potty by Joanna Cole.

Summary: Corny but effective
Review: I bought this book after returning home from a business trip to learn that my 2 1/2 year old daughter had regressed in her potty training desire! So far, the book is very effective. We read it once a day and she listens actively. We talk about the little protagonist, Hannah, and what she's doing as she learns about the potty. I'm so glad that there are books out there for little kids, because the understanding that my daughter is gaining by reading this book seems to be working. It seems that presenting potty training in an intellectual (as opposed to simply behavioral) manner is helping with our toddler.

Summary: Potty Training
Review: I have found this book to be cute, having very good illustrations. I would suggest this book to any parents that are going through the frustrations of potty training. It shows plenty of pictures and it really has the ability to make a child want to feel more grown up and graduate from diapers. It gives them the push they need and shows that when they get used to using this big girl potty, they will be very proud of themselves and say, "I'm off to the potty. No more diapers for me! And I feel great. I am proud of...ME!" Plus it tells the girls that read this, "Want to know a secret? You can do it too! Just march off to the potty like me and Teddy do." My aunt also has this book and she uses it with her first child and she says that it helps very much so because it encourages her daughter to become a big girl and use the potty. I've read this book to her also and when I read it to her she was watching and listening intently. Watching as I turned the page so she could see the next picture. Afterwards, she got up and she said, "I'm a big girl!" Her mom and I both started laughing. But I think the cute way it rhymes and illustrates so well also helps keeping the child entertained.

Summary: Good but not Great
Review: I like this book but it is not "great." My daughter can't get through it without getting bored. We usually only make it half way. The words are very catchy and I really like the story, I just think it's a little too long for a potty book. I've had more success with the shorter ones.
