Rating: Summary: A Must-Have for All! Review: "Old Turtle" is a book that hits right at the heart of us all. God is something different to each of us. Understanding those differences is the key to life. "Old Turtle" shares that understanding like no other book I've ever read. This book is a must-have for children and adults of all ages.
Rating: Summary: If you love a child, and believe in God, buy them this book! Review: "Old Turtle" talks about God and creation without being preachy.
This is one of my very favorite childrens' books, and I like a lot of childrens' books.
If you are lucky enough to have a child to love, do yourself and them a favor and buy this book, then be sure to read it to them again and again. You will probably enjoy it as much as he or she will.
I think this book is truly wonderful!

Rating: Summary: Not for very young children, or non-religious folks Review: ... it's not for everyone, and it's not for kids of all ages. It was given to me by someone who perhaps thought it was a story about a turtle I could read to my infants (there's no reference to religion on the cover, and the book is located in children's sections), when it was much, much too long and slow for probably any child under 3 -- and of course, it's about religion, not animals. My twins love books, but as toddlers they never had the patience to get through this one. Neither could I. And if you're not religious, or (worse) cynical about religion, you'll never get through the book either. ...It's really only for people who enjoy religion.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book! Review: A wonderful book about how we all see God so differently but can respect and even come to see and understand one anothers beliefs.
Rating: Summary: Old Turtle Review: A wonderful gift for anyone. Teaches tolerance, understanding. Beautiful.
Rating: Summary: Old Turtle's Wisdom Brings Peace Review: All of creation is having an arguement about God. Only Old Turtle can bring everyone together in peace and harmony. What an inspiring book! This is a must have for church, home and public libraries!
Rating: Summary: A superb take that all talk of God is metaphorical. Review: For religious educators Wood's magnificent book is a true treasure. If you believe that for God to be God, God must be greater than anything we can conceive, then all talk of God must be metaphorical. We talk about the ineffable in the only way we know how, using the language of poetry. This is a hard concept to teach children. Yet young people know the power of metaphor and how it can evoke far reaching values, ideas, emotions, and beliefs. So Wood has given us the finest example I have ever read of the power and use of metaphor to describe the unknowable. He shows that there are many valid understandings of the ineffable-many paths to knowing the Divine presence in the universe. I thank him for an enormously important contribution to faith development and the affirmation of the power of poetry. The artwork is every bit as powerful a metaphor as well.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding spirtual and environmental book for children. Review: How do you explain what God is to children? As a parent, how do you explain about the importance of caring for the environment and all living creatures? This book accomplishes these things and more. The flowing text and beautiful water-color drawings inspire an understanding of Spirit that children and adults alike can relate to. If you have children, please share this book with them, my daughters love it. If you don't have children, buy this book as a gift for yourself, and read it often, to reconnect with the Spirit that is all around us and in everyone of us. Many thanks to Douglas Wood and Cheng-Khee Chee for such a beautiful book, it has become a family favorite.
Rating: Summary: The ultimate children's book Review: How often do you find a children's book with a intelectually fresh and profound message?? We dont have a family religion in our house, but I feel that it is important to introduce the concept of god for the child to ponder. This book is perfect and non-denominational... christians think it is about Christianity, Taoists think it is about Taoism and so on.. it is applicable to many because it only goes into concept of god and not any particular dogmas.
Rating: Summary: Excellent child's book that touched a teenager! Review: I had first heard of this book when I was in high school and trying to decide what to do with my life. Such a big deal was being made of it that I decided to pick it up in the bookstore and read it. I cried at the end! It was given to me as a gift shortly thereafter and I have kept it with me ever since. It has touched me, and explains god in a way that children and even disenchanted young adults can understand. It also helped me find my way to ecology and the study of god's beautiful creation. I highly recommend this for anyone struggling with how to explain god to their child, or who want to help their children understand the sacredness of life and the beauty within all of us. I still sniffle every time I reach the end.
