Summary: Sarah, Plain and Tall
Review: Sarah, Plain and Tall is a great book. This book is by Patricia MacLachlan. The book is 58 pages long. Patricia MacLachlan also wrote Through Grandpa's Eyes, Arthur, For the Very First Time, Tomorrow's Wizard, Mama One, Mama Two, Cassie Binegar, Seven Kisses in a Row, Unclaimed Treasures, The Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt, Three Names, Skylark, and All the Places to Love. I really liked this book.
The book Sarah, Plain and Tall is about Sarah, the Maggie, Jacob, the father, Caleb, Jacob's son, and Ann, Jacob's daughter. When Caleb was born, the next day his mother died. Caleb now grew up and he was living in the fields with Jacob and Ann. Jacob came home from work and he toll Ann and Caleb he had made an advertisement in the newspaper. The advertisement said that Jacob was looking for a wife and a mother of two kids. After a couple of days, a Maggie from Maine named Sarah wrote a letter to Jacob and said she would be more than happy to be a mother and a wife. Jacob and Sarah were sending each other a lot of letters than Sarah wrote her last letter to Jacob. She said she is going to take a train to Jacob's closest train station. She said to Jacob to come and pick her up. She will be wearing a yellow bonnet. She will be plain and tall. Sarah also brought her cat Seal and presents for Ann and Caleb. When Sarah came to the house she was very happy and gave Ann and Caleb their presents. They were all very happy. She learned how to ride a horse and she played with Caleb and Ann a lot. Still, Sarah missed the sea, and the cool breeze, and her brother too, but she was happy to live with Ann, Jacob and Caleb.
I really liked how the author described the setting. One sentence the author used was "She came though the green grass fields that bloomed with Indian paintbrush, red and orange, and blue-eyed grass. When the author described the fields I pictured the field very good in my head. I was never confused where the characters were.
I also really like the author's style. I think it was very exiting. Everything was clear and there were a lot of details. I understood everything. When they were talking about the dunes at first I didn't know what a dune was so she explained it and then continued.
I thought the book was clear, exiting, great, and interesting. I really liked the book. It had a lot of feelings and emotions in it. I would really recommend this book to you. You should read it.

Summary: Boring, Terrible, Not Good At All
Review: "Sarah, Plain and Tall" is a short and boring book. I, an eleven-year-old boy, had to read it for Accelerated Reader, and as the story progressed it became worse and worse. I thought Sarah's letters to her brother in Maine sounded like letters a four-year-old would write to their parents from camp. The book might have been better if it had been told by another character in the story, such as Caleb or Papa. I would never recommend this book to anyone, unless they are absolutely desperate for AR points. I am very surprised that it won the 1986 Newbery Medal. No offense to the author.

Summary: A poetic story about love and family
Review: "Sarah, Plain and Tall," by Patricia MacLachlan, received the 1986 Newbery Medal, a distinguished honor in the world of literature for young people. The honor was well deserved. "Sarah" is a warm, moving story.

"Sarah" is a story told in the first-person by Anna, a young farm girl who lives with her widowed father and younger brother, Caleb. Anna's father sends by mail for a prospective new wife: Sarah, a woman from the Maine seacoast. As the story unfolds, Sarah arrives on the farm and gets to know the family.

MacLachlan writes in a simple but poetic style that expertly conveys the emotions of her characters. MacLachlan is wonderful at catching the details of farm life, which the reader discovers along with Sarah. I also like the way MacLachlan evokes the Maine coastal landscape through Sarah's dialogue. There is a subtle suspense to the story: will Sarah decide to stay and become a part of the story?

I won't give away the ending. But I will say that "Sara" is a gentle and compassionate book for readers of all ages.

Summary: Great Family Book!

Sarah, Plain And Tall

Author: Patricia MacLachlan
Sarah, Plain And Tall is a heart-warming story about how one woman won the love of two children and their father. This is timely story with appeal to today's many step-parents and blended families. Sarah, Plain And Tall is set in a time when transportation was by train, horse and buggy, or covered wagons. The author does not provide background information regarding historical fact or the time-span the book is set in. The story is accurate in the portrayal of the culture and values of the time period.
Sarah, Plain And Tall is written in the 1st person point-of-view using Anna's voice. She is the oldest child. The language of the dialogue uses some terms that Sarah brought from Maine. This book is a welcome addition to the classroom library. Children living with both natural parents will also benefit from reading this book. Sarah, Plain And Tall is a view from the opposite side of Cinderella (a well-known fairy tale). Children need this positive view of step-mothers, particularly today when the these families are so common.

Summary: Perfect
Review: During the days of homesteading on the American plains, it was not unusual for women to die in childbirth. Caleb and Anna lost their mother to the birth of her second child. The two children yearn for a mother while their father, Jacob, needs a woman to care for his children and home. This is the reason why Jacob advertises for a mail-order bride. Sarah lives on the beautiful Maine coast. She has never married, so when she sees the ad, she answers, describing herself as plain and tall. The children anxiously await Sarah's arrival. Her intention is to investigate the family and the plains before making a committment. She is quiet and matter-of-fact, but quickly captures the hearts of the two children. They worry she does not want to stay, their father seems to be too impatient, and Sarah learns to drive the buggy. When she goes into town, the children are afraid that Sarah, who misses the Maine seashore, is gone for good. This is a lovely story about the need for love, while teaching the reader about life in the midwest during the previous two centuries. Gentle and inspiring.

Summary: A bride from afar
Review: MacLachlan's book takes us back to a time when a man could put an ad in the newspaper and order himself a bride.

Papa, a farmer in the western plains, has been widowed since the birth of his second child, Caleb. He advertises for a wife and gets Sarah, plain and tall (and smart and fun). She agrees to stay and take care of Papa, Caleb, and Anna, although she misses the Maine coast where she grew up.

The plot, like life on a 19th century farm, moves slowly and simply along. I was suprised and touched to learn how eager the children were to make Sarah happy and comfortable in her new life.

The story was very short and easy to read, and would be of interest to children in elementary school.

Summary: An Overview of a Children's Classic
Review: Sarah,Plain and Tall, a popular children's book, brings a plains family very much to life. The characters are believable and the plot is easily followed. Students in grades four and five eagerly devour the chapters, anxiously awaiting the activity in the next chapter. Yes, the book is low-key, but the students seem to appreciate the love and concern exhibited by the adults. I would highly recommend this delightful book to any teacher who wants to bring characters and plot "alive" to his/her class.
