Summary: for children (and adults) of all ages
Review: The illustrations and the story of Stellaluna are a treasure. I purchased this book to help teach children who are preparing to change cultures or those who have already changed cultures; however it is a thoroughly engaging story for children of all ages. I do agree with the warning of other reviewers that this book might not be approriate for younger adopted children. Otherwise this treasure of a book is highly recommended.

Summary: A charming tale with an appealing heroine
Review: "Stellaluna," by Janell Cannon, is a wonderful children's book. Cannon tells the story of a young fruit bat named Stellaluna. After being separated from her mother, Stellaluna is cared for by a "foster family" of birds.

"Stellaluna" tells a lovely story about being proud of who you are, and about maintaining friendships with those who are different from you. And the book is a tribute to mothers--both birth mothers and foster mothers. The colorful illustrations have a truly magical quality to them. And supplemental "bat notes" at the end of the book add an educational dimension to the text. This is an excellent book with a truly memorable heroine.

Summary: I adore this book
Review: Before I had children I came across this book and became obsessed. It's beautifully written and illustrated. Now that I have a daughter I love to read it to her, and enjoy the author's other works as well! It's a wonderful book for any age!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: For anyone who's tried to "fit in"
Review: Do you like bats? You will after reading this book! A baby fruit bat gets lost and ends up being adopted by a family of birds. Stellaluna wants to please her adopted family and tries hard to act like a bird, but it's hard to change who you are! So she struggles with with adapting to her new "bird" lifestyle, while trying to be true to her bat heritage.

Luminous illustrations complement this sweet story that interweaves animal facts with a fable. This award-winning story emphasizes that differences should be celebrated and accepted -- they make us unique. A truly enlivening book.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Not for adopted, orphaned, or step-kids!
Review: I was shocked at the ending-Stellaluna is reunited with her birth family. That never happens to adopted or orphaned children, nor do stepchildren ever see their original family reunited. I'm not sure who this book is for-I don't see anything in it that children who have never "lost" a parent can identify with. For children that have "lost" a parent, the book just reinforces magical thinking. There are too many other great books out there-skip this one.

Summary: Stellaluna
Review: In my opinion "Stellaluna" (a children's story book published for children between 4-7) is an extremly well written children's story book.
When a mother fruit bat is attacked by an owl, her baby bat
falls. Between branches and trees, twigs, thorns and vines; falls the dear Stellaluna.
This book is about survival of the battiest. Cannon describes with great detail and emotion. When I first read this book, I didn't think there was a moral. I was to engrossed in the book to bother for menial tasks as paying attention. But, I have finally figured it out. The moral of this story is, "No matter what happens in life, those who you can depend upon the most is your family and friends".
When you read this book I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Summary: A Sweet and Engaging Book
Review: My boys love this book! They loved it so much I bought the CD-ROM book as well. And the plush bat! They enjoy hanging Stellaluna upside down while reading the story.

The story itself is a little scary when the owl appears and Stellaluna is separated from her mother in the dark forest. But the mother bird and her babies are quick to accept and help Stellaluna. The story emphasizes that differences should be celebrated and accepted, and it's always best to just be yourself. It also shines a positive spotlight on an animal that gets a bad rap--the bat. I'd rate this book better than Cannon's other book, which is about snakes, "Verdi."

The artwork is beautiful; I love simply looking at the pages. And the "Bat Notes" section at the end is informative; I know because my pre-reading child wanted me to read it out loud several times!

Lovers of nature, superb artwork, and literature will not be disappointed reading this story to their little ones.

Summary: Stellaluna Review
Review: My son loves this book! Every night its in the pile of books to read. We read it so much he knows the book my heart and is learning the words himself. This book encourged him to read on his own, being his favorite The pictures are adorable, and the story is great. I would recommend this book to any child.

Summary: wonderful book- beautiful illustrations & good moral
Review: Stellaluna is about a bat who lost her mother. She was then raised by birds and learned to grow up like them (fly during day/eat worms). She eventually found her mother bat but went back to her bird siblings to introduce them to flying at night & eating fruit. The birds were unable to do those things but Stellaluna & the birds decided that despite their differences they will still be friends.

I think this book is great because it teaches children to embrace their differences and also that friendship goes beyond those differences. I love this book & think it has wonderful illustrations- my little baby is only 6 months now but I am sure when he gets older that he will love this book.

Summary: One of my daughter's favorites
Review: Stellaluna is both well-written and lavishly illustrated -- a delight for the young child to view and the older child (as well as the parent) to read -- a rarity among picture books. . My three-year-old has had this book since birth, and has loved it since day one, asking for it to be read over and over.

The story: We follow the young fruit-bat, Stellaluna, through her ordeal of becoming lost and her subsequent upbringing by a family of birds. The resultant bat-bird behavior confuses Stellaluna, but will delight your child with its absurdity. The story contains good conflict resolution, as Stellaluna regains her bat identity and her family, something sure to comfort and teach your child.

For further entertainment, I highly recommend Ms. Cannon's book, VERDI ( a similar tale about a green python; wonderfully written and well-illustrated), as well as the CD-ROM edition of STELLALUNA produced by Living Books (one of the few really GOOD CD-ROMs for children).
