Summary: Pink and Say
Review: This book is about two young soldiers fighting in the Revolutionary War and the formation of their friendship. The colored boy saves the white boy from dieing alone out in a field. The desire to fight for the two boys is much different. For the young colored boy, he longs to have freedom and the yearning for that freedom is what pushes him on, while the young white boy longs to go back home and is too afraid to go back and fight. I loved this book because it seemed so real and you don't read very many war stories from a young child's point of view. It is written for the more advanced reader and would be great for introducing the Revolutionary war with. The author portrays the sorrow and hardship during war but it also shows the strong bonds and the forming of a friendship

Summary: Suggested Reading Level Not Appropriate
Review: This book is suggested reading for ages 4-8 according to the publisher. Although it is a picture book, I don't think it is quite appropriate for younger children, due to the violence and the tragedy addressed in this story, I think that this book is appropriate for grades 4-6, ages 9-12. This book would give a young kid nightmares. The book is historical fiction, that is supposedly based on a real event- a war story that was passed on down from generation to generation. I think that some elements of the story are very good. The friendship between the two young men of different races, but I don't see anything inspiring or positive for the African-American characters. If you step back and take a look at the story, it basically tells young Black children that if you help White people you still get .... in the end. I'm an African-American educator, and I don't think that when I teach my kids about the Civil War that I will introduce "Pink & Say."

Summary: Pinkus Aylee, I've said his name and will always remember
Review: This is the first Polacco book that I ever read; I was instantly mesmerized. PINK and SAY is one of the six Patricia Polacco books I gave to my daughter for her birthday. She is a new second grade teacher and I wanted her to have books that have worked for me, a seasoned educator. This is another touching story written in memory of Pinkus Aylee, a former slave. During the Civil War, this young boy saved the life of Sheldon Russell Curtis (Say) who was Polacco's great, great grandfather. Although this book had a tragic ending, the story is a poignant tribute to an interracial friendship that has been kept alive through the generations of Polacco's family. I have used this book as a great multi-cultural lesson.
Polacco's family pays tribute to Pinkus Aylee by repeating his name. Through this lovely book, generations will now be able to hold his memory in their hearts.
