Summary: My class feels that students will love this tale of courage.
Review: I used the book, Poppy, by Avi to spark enthusiasm for reading juvenile fiction, and enable young students to understand such elements of fiction writing as character development and plot. The students read the book chapter by chapter as part of the class reading assignment. They thoroughly enjoyed the story as it evolved and journeyed with Poppy to Bannock Hill, Dimwood Forest and New House. One student wrote in his review, "Poppy is a great book for all ages to read and enjoy. It teaches courage." Comments from other students showed that they could relate the story to real life experiences. Ben said, "I liked this book because it has a good moral." Tanya felt that Poppy was a real good character and had confidence in herself to make her way through life. Chad wrote, "The book is about a brave-hearted mouse who has the courage to defend her values and her family."

Summary: Esther's book review
Review: It is rare to find a book in which the talking animals act just exactly as you would expect talking animals TO act. In this book a small mouse sets out on a very believable mouse quest. She wishes to find a larger food source for her family while avoiding being eaten by owls, foxes, etc. The setting and main character are not all that different from, "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH". In both cases a small female mouse must fight to save other mice. It's a simple book containing a very good sense of what courage is. There's a lovely section in which Poppy tries to decide whether to carry on her quest or turn back, and her decision to carry on doesn't spring from some fiery belief, but the quiet acknowledgement that it is the right thing to do. The illustrations, by the way, are charming. Poppy is delightfully rendered as a small and charming creature. The map at the front is also very helpful in letting the reader get their bearings. All in all, a great book by Avi.

Summary: A Clever Family
Review: Poppy is the name of an outstanding animal fantasy book written by Avi. The main character in this book is a mouse named Poppy. Two descriptions of Poppy would be brave and willing. This story takes place in Dimwood Forest, a place that Mr. Ocax, a great horned owl says he rules. The story begins with Poppy and her beloved friend Ragweed sneaking into Bannock hill without the permission from Mr. Ocax. Mr. Ocax, in turn attacks them madly. Poppy escaped with a terribly screeched nose and poor Ragweed was eaten by Mr.Ocax. After a day or two, when Poppy and her father go to ask for permission to move to New House, Mr. Ocax says "No" The reason he said no was because Poppy and Ragweed violated his rules by going to Bannock hill without permission. In order to ask Mr. Ocax a very important question, Poppy alone to New house, once again without permission. On the way to New House, Poppy met Erth the porcupine who she thought might eat her. She finally made a deal with Ereth that if he can help her get to New House she would get him some salt from the salt lick. To learn the rest of the story, read the book. I strongly recommend this book because it is a very interesting book that keeps you reading. It is also appropriate for a wide age group.

Summary: An exciting story for most of the book.
Review: Poppy is the name of the book our group is reading . The author is Avi. Poppy is a mouse who lives in a house called Gray House . Poppy's family is running out of food to feed on. The father , Lungwort , and poppy go to ask an owl Mr.Ocax , to go to New House . Mr.Ocax. who says he makes the rules like you can't go any where without my saying , says Poppy's family can't go to New House . He said no because Poppy was on Bannock Hill . Poppy wants to prove to the mice that she isn't the reason Mr.Ocax said no . Poppy announces her journey then leaves. When Poppy finally gets to New House she notices a bigger owl ,but then finds out it is fake . Then Poppy has to fight Mr.Ocax . Poppy wins and Poppy's family goes to New House . Ocax dies.I enjoyed this story because there was a lot of adventures and action. My favorite episode was when Mr.Ocax and Poppy battled because it was fun to read a battle like that . The part I didn't like was when Poppy and Ragweed were on Bannock Hill and Mr.Ocax eats Ragweed because I thought he was cool . I would give the book 3 stars because in some parts the book was boring , like when Lungwort calls for emergency meetings. It can also be exciting , like when Poppy falls into the river. I recommend this book to any one who likes adventure books.

Summary: It was a great book.
Review: Some of our class is reading a book. The book title is "Poppy." The author of this book is Avi. This book is about a mouse, her family and an owl that wants to eat the mice but says he will protect them from other animals. The mice call the owl Mr.Ocax. The house that Poppy and her family live in used to be Farmer Lamout's house but he moved away. Poppy and her family call this house Gray House. One day Poppy and her boyfriend Ragweed went up to Bannock Hill to dance and Ragweed was going to ask Poppy to marry him. Before he could ask Poppy to marry him, Mr.Ocax came. He told the mice never to come on Bannock Hill, so Poppy and Ragweed ran & ran until they thought that Mr.Ocax was gone. He then started going after them again and he caught Ragweed, but Poppy kept running until she got to Gray House. After a few days there was an emergency Meeting and it was about having no food left. Poppy's family had to go searching for food. So Poppy went to New House and found lots of food, so after Mr.Ocax died from him and Poppy getting into a fight and Poppy stabbing Mr.Ocax with a porcupine quill and he died Poppy's family didn't have a boss. So Poppy and her family moved to New House and had plenty of food. I enjoyed this book because there was personification in it. Personification is when animals talk. My favorite part in this story is when Poppy and her family went to Ragweed's death place because it's showing Poppy still loved Ragweed even though she was married. My least favorite part is when Mr.Ocax died because I don't like when people or animals die.I would give this book 5 stars because it was a great book. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Summary: I thought the book was great because Poppy beat an owl.
Review: The title of the book I just read is Poppy. The author of Poppy is Avi In Poppy, a mouse named Poppy overcomes her fears of an owl Mr.Ocax who says he is the king of the forest and wants to kill Poppy. Mr.Ocax wants to kill Poppy because she broke the rules of Mr.Ocax. The law is that any animal must ask Mr.Ocax for permission to go somewhere. He is later killed. The reason Poppy killed Mr.Ocax is because the food at Gray House where Poppy lived was running out. Poppy killed Mr.Ocax because she was only defending her self. After she killed Mr.Ocax her family moved to New House.I think the story was great because I thought Avi had a next idea of a mouse named Poppy versus Mr.Ocax the owl. My favorite part part was in chapter 14 when Poppy traveled to New House with a porcupine named Ereth Mr.Ocax was scared of Ereth because he had quills that hurt anyone. I liked that because Poppy out smarted Mr.Ocax by getting a porcupine Mr.Ocax was scared of.On the scale from 1-5 I would give it a five. I would recommend this book to people that like adventure and action.

Poppy would get Ereth the salt because he loves salt.Poppy got to New house. While she was there she saw Mr. Ocax and she stabbed Mr. Ocax in the foot and she killed him. Poppy went back to Gray House and told everybody the good news that Mr. Ocax is dead and that everybody could move to New House. Poppy did get to New House married a mouse named Rye and they lived happily ever after.I enjoyed this book because the story had a lot of action and details. This is my favorite because it has a lot of action .I would give this book five stars. I would recommend this book to somebody because It has a lot of action and details in the story.
