Rating: Summary: Give your child a love for reading Review: I read these books in 3rd grade. I'm 25 now. I still think fondly about the times when I read the Boxcar Children series. I still remember the vivid explaination by Gertrude Chandler Warner of the treasures the children find including a cup with a chip in it that they use to survive while living in the boxcar. This is one of the many books that helped me develop a great love for reading. As an educator, I can now say that this is one of the literary gems out there that is timeless for students (and adults) of all ages to enjoy.
Rating: Summary: My review of The Boxcar Children Review: I read this with my four year old. He read many of the words and really liked the story. Quite a winner!
Rating: Summary: A Favorite Childhood Book Review: I remember this book as being one of the first chapter books that I ever read as a child. Once I started reading it I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I read the book many times as a young girl, and just reciently read it again as an adult. I still enjoyed the story just as much as I did as a young child. As a child I would wonder what it would be like to live in a boxcar in the woods, and what it would be like not to have my parents at such a young age. There are many adventures and situations that these four children are faced with in the story. I would always wonder, "What would I do in that situation?" I could picture these children, thier situations and adventures so clearly as I read. These children had so many great ideas on how to live, survive, and care for one another. Together they made the boxcar thier home, and because they made it themselves, they loveded it. Even after thier grandfather finds them, and they find out that he is rich and wonderful, the children miss the comforts of thier boxcar. I feel that this book would be wonderful for boys and girls of all ages. It is a heart warming story that will make a person laugh and cry. Everytime I finish reading this book, I feel greatful for all that things that I have.

Rating: Summary: This is a great series! Review: My 11 year old son has a reading deficit, and hates to read! We ordered the first 2 boxed sets in this series for him to read and number 9 as well...we got them two days ago and he has read almost the entire first book already and can't wait to finish it tomorrow *and* start on a new one! I am so impressed with the enthusiasm he has! This is the first time I have seen him read for enjoyment! I say buy as many as you can if you want to encourage your kid to read!
Rating: Summary: Refreshing! Review: My kids love these books!
Are the characters kind, polite, and "good"? Yes! Is the setting unfamiliar to today's kids? Yes! Isn't this what we should be wanting to introduce to our children? Please, yes! I am disappointed that the publishers have tried to "update" the books by modernizing the pictures on the covers (1980's--talk about outdated!) instead of staying true to the time period. Let our kids see how people dressed and the kinds of things they had. Let them experience healthy, kind relationships. Fill them with good examples, rather than expecting them to only care for the familiar reality of their own lives that is so often lacking moral good.
One other note--only the first 19 books are the original stories written by Mrs. Warner. The publisher decided to continue the series due to popularity, but I wouldn't count on the same quality.
Rating: Summary: Parnell's review Review: The Boxcar Children became a book in 1942, since then they have sold millions and millions of books. The story is about four children who are trying to look for a place to stay. Their parents died. They have a grandfather. They have charactrs like Benny. He is the little one of the family and he is good for helping out but sometimes he just cries. I recommend you to read this book because when I first read this book I thought it was stupid but then I really liked it. I started to read all of the Boxcar Children Books. If you read one of the books you will want to read them all. I thought this book, Boxcar Children was cool you should really find this book in the library or buy it. I got into this book in the middle when I read it. I really really give this book 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: We thought this was a great book! Review: There are four orphans named Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. These orphans don't want to live with their grandfather because they think he's mean. Instead they find a boxcar to live in. Henry is 14 and since he's the oldest he goes to work for Dr. Moore to earn money. Jessie is 12 and gathers food for everyone and takes care of the boxcar. Violet is 10 and takes care of Benny who is the youngest. Benny is 5 and he has a little pink cup and loves it even though it has a crack. Can the children survive on their own? Read it to find out! Overall we liked this book. Ben though the story was funny because the characters do silly things like when Benny cut Watch the dog's hair into a J. Ethan felt sick when he read about the children eating cherry dumplings; Andre and Camille felt sick, too. Camille liked the book because it has a very, very, very happy ending. Andre thought it was a pretty funny book and Benny was especially silly. Our opinion is this is a great book and you should read it.
Rating: Summary: Four plucky orphans take on the world Review: This pleasant story opens as four tired and hungry siblings, aged 5 to 15, press their noses against a bakery window, eyeing the lovely goodies inside. They have recently lost their parents and are on the run from their mean grandfather, whom they have never met. They find an abandoned boxcar in the woods, set up housekeeping, and live quite happily on berries, bread, and a little meat bought with the oldest boy's gardening pay. Life is very good until one of the girls becomes sick and they must tell an adult about where they live.
The book was written in the 1942 by a teacher who cleverly used only the 500 most common words in the English language to create a very easy to read, yet exciting, beginning chapter book for 7 and 8 year olds. Most of the story concerns the children's sense of fun and boundless resourcefulness, as they take care of themselves, all the while being cheerful and thankful for what they have. Children who are ready for a chapter book will be delighted to find this one is very easy-to-read. They will enjoy the adventure of living in the woods without adults, and, of course, it has a very happy ending. This book is the first (and I think the best) of a very long series of adventures for the Boxcar Children.
