Rating: Summary: Santa's Little Girl Review: "In the Land of Forever, the first snowflake is always silver" From the very first sentece to the very last detailed and beautiful picture Brittney Ryan has spun a beautiful snowflake of a tale about a beautiful princess who is frozen in time, and in control of a terrible curse. Every last exceptation that I had for this book was exceeded immensly. I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas story that I definetly going to read every winter from now on. I abosolutely love it! It's a classic.
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary, Fabulous, Exquisite Review: A great read for young girls. Highly recommended. an amazing read, definetly a page turner. Just a lovely insiteful read. Hoping for a sequel. Please read it you wont regret i promise. :)
Rating: Summary: I love The Legend of Holly Claus!!!!!!!!! Review: A selfless child asks Santa what he would like for Christmas and the result is Holly Claus the first ever child born in the land of immortals. The Plot is that an evil sorcerer needs a pure and compassionate heart to break the curse upon him. He decides to encase Holly's heart in snow to keep it pure. This also means that she can't go anywhere warm or her heart will melt and kill her.
This story line reminds me a lot of Sleeping beauty. The Evil sorcerer/ess places an evil curse on the princess but a wise fairy manages to lessen the curse but not obliterate it.
To find out how Holly saves the Land of Immortals, read the book. The prose is rich and satisfying and adults as well as older children will like this book. For older girls it is a wonderfully empowering story of a girl overcoming incredible odds and saving her home. For adults it is a rich story in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm and other fairy tales, that will take you back in time.
For me this is one of the few true "Fairy Tales" to have come out in modern times.
The only quibble that I have is that it is quite long over 400 hundred pages this and the somewhat scary parts have me wondering why this is placed int he Juvenile section of my public Library. If it were me I would put it in YA. I certainly don't think this is appropriate for a third grader. I put this a fourth grade minimum and more like 6th grade.
Rating: Summary: Like an Old-Time Fairy Tale Review: I read a lot of 19th-century children's literature, so I was delighted to read this old-fashioned fairy tale that brings to mind the novels of L. Frank Baum (the Oz books) and the stories of Frank Stockton. The prose is absolutely beautiful, describing things in imaginative language, and the detailed pen-and-ink drawings are a wonder to behold. The story speaks of the nature of evil--real evil and not the piecrust bad guys of some juvenile fiction--and good with a collection of wondrous characters. The animals in particular are memorable, including Tundra the wolf and Lexy the mischievous fox.
There are some very dark places in the narrative, so I would not recommend the book to a very young child who is overly sensitive, but otherwise imaginative readers will love this book.
Rating: Summary: The Legand of Holly Claus Review: I'm not even finished the book and i love it! Read it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Shirley Temple Meets Steven King Review: Simply awful: smarmy psycho- babble with occasional gratuitous violence...I read this book with the intent of presenting it to my daughter as a gift; I cannot in good conscience give it to anyone. The author takes an intriguing plot line and swings between preaching to and horrifying the reader. Boo, hiss.
Rating: Summary: A heroin with a voice Review: This is an enpowering book, particularly for a young girl to read. Holly has a voice. She is not merely lying comatose waiting for some prince to make her life worth while. Holly takes action. My response to a review I just read supra about this book by Angel: Angel, the reason a bundle from California might be "particularly muddy" my dear is because it DOES rain in California, contrary to what you might have heard. The reader can wonder how the bundle got muddy. That is what reading is all about... the wonder. This book is wonder-full.
The illustrations are magnificent. I will treasure my copy.
Rating: Summary: A WONDERFUL BOOK TO SHARE! Review: WHAT GREAT READ!! It is a wonderful tale that takes the reader to a place they could only imagine before, but can now see it through the eyes of Holly Claus. As a family, we read it as fast as we could to follow Holly through her exciting adventure. We then read it again, taking in even more of the hopeful inspiration it offers along the way. As the mother of an imaginative, nine year old girl,(and a real book hound!), I was so happy to find a book that offers such a wonderfully engaging heroine, with the values and morals that we try to instill everyday, yet so adventurous in spirit. The author, Brittney Ryan, has done that, without preaching, but with the wonderful voice of Holly Claus. We have given it to my daughter's friends as gifts., They too have enjoyed the story immensely. This book should be read as a family, there is something for all to enjoy! It is a family favorite of ours.
