Rating: Summary: Monique Hart-Great Book-Very Realistic Review: I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!! It is one of my most treasured possessions. It is very gritty and it is so close to non-fiction it is unbelievable. When I have children I will definately make sure they read this book. The relationship between Phyllisia and her father reminded me so much of my own relationship with my father. I really could relate to this book and I think anyone of any age will appreciate this book because it is priceless, everyone who has gone through adolecence can relate. Ms. Guy did a wonderful job and I recommend this book to everyone I discuss literature with. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: "Friends" is a down to earth story about two good friends. Review: I recommend "Friends" by Rosa Guy, because it's a really good down to earth story about two good friends, and if you like scary books get any book by R.L. Stine, ("Curtains", " The Window", "The Boyfriend"). I rate both books about a 9, because all the books keep you in suspense. The book "Friends" was about two girls who were the total oppposite, but became great friends in the end. I don't really remember anything about the R. L Stine stories, all I remember was that all the books were kind of scary, and you could read a whole entire book in one night. I really liked these books because they weren't boring, and depressing
Rating: Summary: A book I recommend..."The Friends" Review: I recommend this book to middle school children because it is a book about building healthy friendships and family issues. Phyllisia Cathy was rejected and beaten up by her schoolmates, sometimes for being smart, or sometimes for nothing at all. She was a, slightly, prosperous fourteen-year-old girl with a complete family, meaning a mom, a dad, and a sister. Then there was a girl named Edith Jackson who was indigent, not so smart, and came from a shattered family. Edith was furthermore one of the toughest girls in school. These two total opposites meet after Edith stuck up for Phyllisia after she was crudely beaten. From that moment on they knew they needed each other. Edith and Phyllisia had a roller coaster friendship ride. They went through problems in school with peers, to Calvin, which is Phyllisia's inferior father, to the possessiveness of Phyllisia's sister, to even the death of Phyllisia's mother by reason of breast cancer. Phyllisia assisted Edith with taking care of Edith's younger siblings, and guided Edith out of trouble, because before they met Edith use to steal and curse. This book shows the significance of friendship, and the way teenagers can get through the hardest time just by having someone's sustenance. The family life that goes on in this book does not only happen in books and in movies, but also in fact happens in actual life. That is one of the surpluses of this book, teenagers can comfortably connect to the problems. Altogether, this is a worthy book for middle school children because there are a lot of life long lessons that many teenagers learn at that age.
Rating: Summary: Overall "Good", but could be better Review: Rosa Guy had a great idea for this book. Phyllisia and Edith had a really nice friendship too. I felt many topics were left unexplained. Many events in Phyllisia's life were just left alone after they were mentioned. I really wanted to know what happened to many of them. You will probably see what I mean when you read the book. But, I will give this book credit. I would recommend this book to other readers. It's really full of events.
